How to get oil out of balsa/ply...

RE: How to get oil out of balsa/ply...
Kitty litter will dry it out. So does talcum powder.
There used to be a spot remover on the market that would work pretty good. Can't remember the name. Spray it on.
If you use a heat gun, the oil will bubble to the surface where you can wipe it off with a rag. Alcohol can be applied to the balsa (soak it in) and then use the heat gun again. Wipe off oil residue.
When you have got as much of it out as possible, you can treat the surface with balsa rite. Then monokote over it.

i have heard that sticking the nose of an oil soaked plane in a 5 gallon bucket and pouring cat litter in it will soak up the oil very well.

You can mix up a brushable slurry of alcohol and talcom powder (or cornstarch); work it into the wood with a stiff brush; let dry; brush off when dry; wipe with alcohol; repeat until you are satisfied. Balsarite or Stix It will help insure a good bond. I use the fabric formula Balsarite thinned with acetone instead of the plastic covering formula; it seems to work better.

I just recovered a eight year old well soaked plane. could not get all the oil out and the covering did not want to stick, so , thinned out carpenter glue with water, painted it on and let dry overnight, then sanded and covered. That went well for me.
