I don't know where I got an interest in airplanes, but for r/c model building I remember. I walked into the local drug store while delivering the Winnipeg Tribune. Scanned through the magazines and picked up an issue of American Aircraft Modeler. Bob Violett's Shrike was on the cover. A slick fibreglass model painted orange and purple. At home my dad said the local club (Winnipeg Radio Control Club) was actually only a few miles south on highway 59. We went out to watch one Sunday afternoon. Looked through the magazines pricing out what I needed to get into the hobby and saved my paper route money. Bought a Midwest Sweet stick, 5 channel Expert Radio through Indy RC. Canadian Dollar was 10 cents above par to the US at the time. Purchased an Enya 35 at St. John's Hobby Shop on Portage Avenue (it's been gone for years now). Getting a drivers liscense helped, so dad didn't have to take me to the field. Now while my dad never went much to the field with me, when my stick crashed, he and mom replaced it with a Falcon 56 Mark II as a Christmas gift. That flew great. Then came University (engineering courses), beer, girls. .... job hunting .... life in general.

my dad and my uncle both worked for Rockwell/Boeing so it's in the dna. my uncle has been modeling planes for decades and bought me my 1st kit (Kadet MK II) around 1980. i've loved rc planes ever since.
