mechanical retracts

how difficult is it to build a set of retractable mech gear? for planes 70 inches and down

Are you talking about plain old mechanical retracts, or a worm gear type? Plain old mech retracts are only $20.

what to you mean by the worm gear type? most 20 dollar gear wont support
a 70 span airplane

Then there are the sturdier type designed by RCU's own Minnflyer like [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=686]this.[/link] I have seen the worm gear type, but can't find a link right now. The LADO units are also available I think. Have you considered air retracts?
