RE: how low can a 6 volt be and be safe
I was testing my MiHM 6 volt with a expanded scale voltmeter and it did not drop off untill around 5 volts. It took a long time to get from 6v to 5v.
but I don't know if the expanded scale voltmeter puts the same load on as a plane. If they are digital it may brop off quicker. I have flown my reg. planes with 4 reg. servos down to 5.4 volts without a problem.

If you stop flying at 6.0 volts, you are only using a fraction of the battery capacity. Under a 300 mA load, if the battery reads 5.5 or higher, you still have some battery left. It takes a long time to go from 6.0 volts to 5.5 volts. from 5.5 to 5.0 volts does not take very long. From 5.0 to 4.0 happens very quickly.

G'day Mate,
Nicads or NiMh batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.2 volts per cell, & they are said to be flat at 1.1 volts per cell, so a 6 volt or 5 cell pack is flat at 5.5 volts or will be very soon when it gets to that voltage, so you still have most of the capacity left at 6.2 volts, when you stopped flying.

Oh, gotcha... I haven't crossed over to Lipos, yet. I'm still in the NiCad and NiMhd Batteries. 4 and 5 Cell versions. My models are small enough to fit in my truck so no need to upgrade yet.

What DMcQuin said, you will be perfectly safe to fly down to 5.5 volts; at that point you will still have 15 to 20% safety factor. If you are recharging at 6 volts, you are only using about 20% of the available time.
