Default Do you have any tips on re-doing CA hinges?

I installed my CA hinges on my U Can Do 46, and noticed a warp in the left aileron. I ordered a new aileron from Great Planes. Before I begin, do you have any tips on removing the old hinges and placing the new ones?

Do I just cut them, trim them down, and install hinges in new slots?

Thanks

I absolutely 100% agree with everything that MinnFlyer said. Big Max 1935 and starfire73 were pretty close, too.

You can just walk into a doorway with the wing, snagging the aileron with a shock load. They self cleave.

You will most likely need to move your new slots just far enough away from the old slots so that you are not trying to cut into the old CA. I have never tried replacing CA hinges where the old ones were. I have moved them left or right from the original positions with success.

Yes, that's important. If the wood surrounding the new slot has dried CA in it, the CA applied on the new hinges will not wick in and adhere the hinge properly.

Hmmm... that very well may be the case, and it would be hard to tell if CA has already wicked into the surrounding wood to the point that it would prevent a new application from taking properly.
I was toying with the idea of going to a regular pin hinge that I could epoxy in, instead.

You'll be able to tell. Balsa will cut like basswood when it has a little glue in it. When it cuts like spruce you know it's saturated.

Hi,

FWIW I would cut the CA hinges off level with the surfaces and replace with Robart hinge points. There is a very good "sticky" on their installation.

Cheers,

Colin
