how much time and money do you want to invest?
i opted for one of these, and it's great and very universal.

If the idea of wood holding your engine bothers you a bit, try this one, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXR587&P=7. I made a test stand with this mount. The tank mount and throttle lever are pretty easy to fabricate. In fact, I went to Lowes and ended up with free wood to make the base that holds the engine mount and then is clamped to the table.

So far I've just made my own out of red oak, brass screws (cause I like em) and Elmers Carpenter's Glue. A-lot of work if you have several engines but I like to tinker.

I'm really dangerous now. I just got a new table saw and drill press. If I can just scrape up enough for a band saw I'll be in like flint. I get my red oak from Lowe's Home Improvement Center. I guess I could use maple as well but oak is beautiful stuff.

Bill, you need to venture out and around where you live. Someone around there sells all kinds of local kiln dried hardwoods.
The do around here. I have Lowe's, Home Depot, and Menards just up the street but I can also get most any kind of local wood elsewhere.
I have rock and silver maple, walnut, and white oak mostly
I remade a engine stand in northern maple a few yrs ago

RE: Test Stand ideas
This is my test stand.. Large pics so I'm just posting links

Just a maple plank with blocks to hold the tank and servo.
Plywood plate to mount the engine.. New motor just cut a new ply plate.
I don't bother powering up the servo.. Just use an old one and adjust manually.. They hold throttle position just fine.
There is a cleat on the bottom to clamp it into my B&D workmate
Workmates are great.. I used to have a cleat to clamp my chopper in one and run it up to check blade tracking.
In use video

Not as nice as some of the others but it's simple
I found my old tatone engine test mount like JohnBuckner's last month so I may build a new one around that.

Sure, but wood with nice square, not radiused, edges would be better to set your engines mounting lugs on. 2 X 4s on a slab of pluwood would work fine. I would recommend a good wood glue and screws to hold it all together.
Pay attention to your fuel tank height. The centerline of the tank should be in line with your needle jet/carb venturi. If you have a hand held jig saw and are careful you can do a very nice job. Be sure to fasten your stand to somethig solid with screws or preferably clamps. If you are single, the kitchen table will do. Maybe a picnic table if you are not.

Very nice and very functioal. You can even make different plywood inserts for different engines. I like stainless Allen heads also. Your B&D Workmate gave me another reason to buy this thing called a Jaw Horse that I've seen on TV.
Thanks,

RE: Test Stand ideas
Here's mine... I built it from scratch and it works great. It's a "RedNeck" way of doing it, but it works. Broke in a Evolution .46 NX and a .61 NX on it without it flying away. I was just a little oil soaked behind the engine... I had to in order to keep my foot on the stool so it wouldn't vibrate away from me.
It's cheap and it works well enough to do its job, just looks scary. I guess I'm trying to say is you don't have to pay for one... just make it yourself.

Hardwood is nice but any wood will do except balsa. There is nothing wrong with pine and your wallet will love you for it. Hardwood, oak, maple, beech is just a-little more durable.

I second that.
