Get a standard gear from TNT.

I don't think there is "better" gear for the 4 star than the springy gear that comes with it. The .40, .60, and 1.20 all have the same type of gear. I would never change mine as I believe it saves the airframe from a lot of other problems like ripped out LG blocks and cracked fuselages... but if you care to... I certainly agree with the TNT suggestion.

You can run a solid piano wire axle, put wheel collars on both sides of the gear. It will remove all of the spring in the gear, but I like a little spring in my gear though.

When you let a friend fly your plane and he lands hard, you need that spring in the gear to absorb the shock. Otherwise it would tear up the plane. Can you imagine riding in a car with no springs or shock absorbers? That's what it would be like.
If you are bouncing, try landing a little slower.

well I test flew my 4 star 40 this morning with the stock gear.it is bouncy but not as bad as I thought it would. So I'm not changing a thing.Your right about the shock absorbers on the gear.Need that or else i will be repairing the underside of the plane every time she flies. As far as slowing her down for landing. She slows down nice.I had a 4 star before this one and had an OS 40FP.This one has a 46FX.More power and more weight in the nose but balances out flies awesome!!And the only change I made was duel aileron servos. That center servo kept binding inside the fusalage. Thanks to all who replied.

I totalled my first one by going inverted a bit too low.... : ) I built a second one and flew it for a couple of years until I bored of it a bit.. I then chopped a couple of bay off the wing, ordered a wing kit and built it flat for the top wing, moved the LG block ahead one inch and added an OS .61 sf... Lot of horses! Still using the stock 4 star gear...

Randy, That is VERY nice looking. And a good way to "recycle" an old friend. Maybe in a couple more years it will get a third wing and OS91???

Thanks Tom, It actually looks a bit better than the old photos shows...but I had the pic on file and I'm lazy. The wings are staggered considerable and that was the main factor for having to move the LG block. Even I couldn't kill the good flying qualities of the 4 star, it flys as good as it ever did.
I don't know about the 3 winger... then I'd have to recover it in red???
Here is my larger version with a Saito 1.50. I rounded everything and lowered the canopy a bunch for a sleeker look. I still use the stock gear on it also. It is flexable much like the .40 size. Sorta walks over rough field as is easy on the airplane.

Randy, like the bipe! ? a single pod type mount for the upper? Are there active control surfaces on upper. VERY Interesting.

Go with a fiberglass gear. The aluminum gear they come with are soft, and on a hard landing can bend, and smack the underside of your wing. The fiberglass gear still "gives", but at a much better controlled rate. I switched to a fiberglass gear on my 4*60, and I like it much better.

Sleaman, I know what you are talking about.... A friend that I fly with built a .60 size a couple of years ago. The gear on it was soft and would actually bend on a medium hard landing. ( not spring back ). I knew my 4 stars and my 1.20 were not like this so I took it on myself to call SIG mfg for him... They sent out a new gear right away...it fixed his problem. They must have had some poorly tempered metal of something. Your situation sounds exactly like his. To their credit, they replaced it without question.

Could be the same deal, Mine is an ARF, one of the very first available last summer. I painted the fibergloss gear gloss black, looks much better than the factory geat. I've also got different wheels/tires, and long bright axles. Looks pretty tough, and performs well.
