ASP engines
With all the hype about the Hobby King website, I decided to check it out. The prices are real good on everything. I was looking at there glow engines, and they carry ASP 2 and 4 stroke engines. Has anyone had any experience with ASP engines, either 2 and/or 4 stroke engines? Ive personnaly never heard of the brand, but I'm always willing to try something new. I figure if you are completing a plane and get the engine, servos, and rx battery from Hobby King, you could save a lot of money; of course you get what you pay for. Ive heard some guys at the field have used there servos and havent had any problems, just wondering about the ASP engines. Thanks for the input!

RE: ASP engines
ASP appears to be identical to Magnum. Both are made by the Sanye factory which makes several brands. ASP is marketed in Europe and other parts of the world.
I like my Magnum four strokes so I'd probaly like ASP. I have an ASP 61 two stroke and I like it very much.

RE: ASP engines
At the moment I am having a miserable time with Hobby King. I placed a fairly large order with them. I went through the whole process of registering with the "Pacific Asia payment plan" for credit card use. What did I get? Nothing. After several emails I was told the order process was unsuccesful. and I should order again. So I did. What have I got? Nothing. I am now awaiting a reply from Customer Service, if there is any. AGAIN.

Sorry for the grief Ed. I can honestly say that you seem to be in the minority. I did notice that they accept PayPal and the asia credit card thing just might be your credit card company denying the charges. If you want to give a third try maybe sign up and use PayPal, it doesnt cost anything and is fairly easy. Just my 2 cents.

RE: ASP engines
I have two twostroke and two fourstroke ASP engines. I bought the first ASP five years ago and was very ipressed with the quality. For many years i mainly used O.S. engines, which are of high quality, but i no longer find them worth the higer price; that is how high i value ASP engines ( i have been flying RC for 35 years).

RE: ASP engines
I purchased an ASP 1.08 long ago when the line was being sold in the US maybe it was World Engines, can,t remember but it has served long and well in my Steroid Tiger (an eighty inch Tiger 11 copy) I gave the airplane away year or so ago and it,s still very active. Needed to use two head gaskets with the fuels I tended to use since no nitro or 5% is not a practical fuel for me to stock.
I purchased two Turnigy 52cc gassers from Hobby City for a friend and I. Service was good and used PayPal. I have not used mine yet but the other is serving in a 50 sized Cap of some sort (probably a CMP) for around thirty flights now and the owner is estatic with the engine.

RE: ASP engines
I am having trouble remenbering but seems it was 13 inch with something like six or seven inch pitch.
I had the fun of flying the ship once agine when he got her cleaned up agine maybe a year ago this is the new owner not to long ago with it:
This other pictures shows a young fellow with a big Lazy Ace also with an ASP 108, think he was using 15 inch but flatter pitch. He was our aero tow pilot with that ship just before he went off to school at Embry Riddle. It was just about a perfect tow plane for our stuff and I have flown both ends of the towline with that ship. The red white and blue ship is the tow plane with the ASP and I am the gympy one with my Schnieder Sport and my Oxy Moron convertable twin engine glider.

RE: ASP engines
ASP's were real common in the USA/Canada until the New series of Magnums made by Sanye came along.
I had several from Indy R/C which I have since sold or traded away.
Then I had some ASP's from Just Engines of Great Britain. I still have one of those.
The ASP's were and are made by Sanye near Hong Kong as are SC and Magnum engines
Horizon now sells Evolution Glow engines instead of ASP's which are also made by Sanye

RE: ASP engines
There is reference the above postings that ASP's and Magnum's are built in the same facility. I believe what is inferred is that these two are identical - other than possibly minor cosmetic changes - which would make sense from a manufacturing perspective. If so, then the different branding strategy is obvious given the different markets they serve.
Does anyone know that ASP and Magnum are indeed identical? I was looking at buying a .61 ASP four stroke for my 1/5 SIG Cub, but I want to make sure it is a good engine before I do.
Thanks.

RE: ASP engines
The Sanye's have been made for many years and a ASP made 30 years ago is not interchangeable with a new Magnum.
But a new magnum is identical to a new SC or ASP with a couple exceptions
One brand two stroke may by chance be ABC and the other ringed in some larger sizes
The ASP and Magnum XLS52 two stroke engines have a different head.

RE: ASP engines
I am glad I came across this thread. Before I did, I was considering a Saito .62 at $245, but HobbyKing has the ASP .61 listed at $115. With shipping costs it's still half the price.

RE: ASP engines
Correction to above post: the 4-stroke ASP .61 is now listed at $99.99!
When I checked last night it was listed at $130. Earlier today when I made the above post it was $115, and when I went back to buy one now it was listed at $100, so I figured what the heck and bought two of them! Hard to go wrong at this price (or at least I hope!)
If anyone is interested there are only two left, If I recall correctly there were over a dozen in stock yesterday.

RE: ASP engines
ASP = A cceleration S peed P erformance, I purchased a couple in the late 80's of .40 size and ran them on Quickee's for racing for that type of class racing. I was very happy for the performance of the engine(s) Still have them "pickled". Yeah, "one of these days" I'll install them in a sport plane.
Good running engine for what it represented. My .02 worth.

RE: ASP engines
I have 4 of the ASP engines from the early 90's. .40 / .61 / .75 / .91 All of them run just fine to this day. Unless they've changed the core design and material's drastically, the engines are good.. good value for the money in my opinion. Now.. I'm also an OS fan.. as they are excellent too.. but for half the money.. you can get just nearly as good.

RE: ASP engines
I recently came across the following website that "appears" to have pretty decent info on the current ASP offering
www.justengines.unseen.org/acatalog/ASP.html
Also, RCU has "overview"information about many different products. The following link www.rcuniverse.com/product_guide/engineguide.cfm will get you close. Select mfg of ASP and hit the go button.
