Engine for a CG Anniversary Cub?
I have an "Anniversary " Cub, and had planned to use one of my O.S. 48 Surpass engines. Now I'm beginning to doubt that it will be enough engine...any experience with this combo out there?
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

The last one I had I put a K&B .61 on it. It was plenty of engine, but you'd probably be happier with the 4 stroke, like an OS .61 or similar.
If it's the clipped wing, you'll definately need more than the .48

Engine for a CG Anniversary Cub?
Thanks, Bear, for the reply....It is not the clipped wing, and I'm ok with flying scale, but wouldn't want the plane to be seriously underpowered. I didn't build the kit, and it seemed pretty light, especially compared to my sport-scale Sig Citabria. The Citabria flies great with a 70 Surpass, so I figured the 48 would be plenty. I'm just wondering now that I'm installing radio components and such...the cub seems to be getting heavier....maybe it needs a 70 too?

The .70 would, in my opinion, be a great match. Just use a lower pitch prop to keep the speed down. With the K&B .61, most of my flying was done at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle, but I would rather do that than struggle with a 2 stroke .46. The same idea with the .48 vs. the .70
Good luck

I'm using an OS 52 in mine which gives it more than enough power for scale flight but not for aerobatics beyond stall turns and lazy loops.
Try the 48 and exchange it if you're not happy.

I used an OS 70 in my Cub with a 13-6 master airscrew prop. Absolutely beautiful combination. Plenty of power and I flew almost all the time at half throttle or less, but was there if needed.

J3 engine
I've built and flown about 12 of these with engines ranging from 40 to 91. Some clpped wing, some floats. They all flew very well. I have two I fly now - one clipped with OS 46 and one full wing with floats with an OS 70 FS. They all fly well - just a very well designed plane. Keep it light, get the CG right and prop it right.

Engine for a CG Anniversary Cub?
I had a Goldberg Cub built as a clipped wing version and powered it with a Saito .65 four stroke. It was more than enough for aerobatic performance. It would climb at about a 45 to 50 degree angle until it was out of sight. It took about 1/3 throttle to fly it at a scale-like speed. The .48 four stroke you mentioned would be perfect for the full wing version. I've seen one fly with
this size four stroke and it was very realistic, including loops, rolls, spins, etc. Unless you want it to fly like an Extra or Cap, that size engine is just perfect. You'll enjoy the heck out of it. I know I
did. Flew mine for several years and hundreds of flights.

Thanks, Aerohead!
That kind of confirms what I thought...I do have larger 4-strokes I can use if necessary. Thanks to all you other guys, too! Good luck with all your winter building projects!

I flew my 82" wingspan Hangar 9 J-3 (which is not a light kit by any means), that is just about the same airplane as the Goldberg version, with first, and HP .49 FS, it was perfect!, I then broke in (2) OS .48's FS on that airplane, had to add some nose weight, but it flew right on the money with them also, but was underpowered when fitted with floats, so I changed to an OS .70 FS and it is overpowered for land flying by right on the money for water flying, it still has that engine on, and to use more than half throttle is a waste of fuel, I used 12-6 with the .48's and now use a 13-6 with the .70, which by the way is a great engine!.
Sooo!, take your pick!

Engine for a CG Anniversary Cub?
I have just got back from the maiden flight of my CG Anniversary Cub. I love it........ I have an ASP 91 four stroke in it and it has ample power, I have got the full 76.5" Wing. I had four flight with it today and never went over half throttle with it. I just like the slow graceful flight characteristics of the Cub and thats what i bought it for.
I believe you can use any size motor (.40 - .91) it just depends on how you control your throttle thumb.
What ever size you choose you are going to love the CUB.......

I too believe that the 48 will be fine on it. I have an 81" (full wing) Cub with a 52 on it and it flys quite nicely. I'd be happier with a touch more power for take offs, but it's quite scale now.
It will also fly nicely at 2/3rd's throttle once cruising.
