Nelson Hobby Paints?
 

Hey guys does anyone know if Nelson Hobby still around? I was looking for their website to buy some paint and can't find them

You can buy the paint direct from System 3, but only in the standard colors.

Go to Home Depot and buy Behr latex paint in the sample cans. They will mix any color you want. I think the sample cans are under $5 each. Both are latex paint. The Behr paint is excellent. A sample can will paint several planes

RDJeff, thanks for the heads up on the paint. Steve, I'm assuming you spray the Behr, do you thin it?

Actually I brush most of it. I build primarily WW1 models and the brushing works better. Buy a quality Latex brush, synthetic bristles. Do not use a foam brush. I keep the brush wet, by dipping it in water, a quick tap onto a paper towel , then into the paint. I do this every brush load. I like 1" and on larger areas 2" brushes. Do not let them dry. Either immediately clean them or put them in a cup of water.

Now having said that, I am building a 1/3 scale se5a that has a lot of metal on the front of the fuse. I sprayed that. I thinned the paint about 25-30% with water. I experimented on the amount before spraying the plane. It worked very well.

The System 3 paint is actually a water based polyurethane, not a latex. It is boat paint, and is water proof, and mildly fuel proof. If you add their cross-linker to it, it then becomes very fuel proof. It cleans up with water, and you can use water to thin it also. There's a good thread about using it on the RCG site if you're interested. I've used it on several planes now, with good results.

RDJeff, I just found a couple of threads on RCG thanks for the tip. I found a building thread here on RCU where a first time painter brushed on the System 3 with great results which is why I was interested in the first place. Thanks again guys for all the input I really appreciate it.

Home - WarbirdColors also uses the Systems Three paint but mixed to match scale planes.

Systems 3 Satin clear over latex works great for warbirds IMO,, and as stated if you use the crosslinker it is very fuel proof

Examples with Satin Clear

Can Systems 3 Satin clear with crosslinker be used over Rust-oleum Painter's Touch 2X ? Also what size jar would be needed to cover a 1/5 scale P-51 Mustang?

Being water based I'd think it could go over anything, on the Zero, I used it over the Rustolem Flat Black,,soaked right in no problem just like with the latex.

I'd think One small sample size jar should be enough to seal a plane that size,, but @ $5 each buy 2,, you'll use it later,,

Two things about that- this stuff does not stick to glossy surfaces, so you'd need to paint with Rustoleum flat or either color sand the gloss off it with 320 grit. Second, solvent based paint takes a pretty long time to fully outgas. If it still smells like paint, it's not finished. If you put the WBPU over it before it's done, it could lift and peel after a while.

So yes, this paint will work fine as a protective clear coat over fully cured non-glossy Rustoleum. But you'd make life easier for yourself by either painting with Systems 3 color to begin with or using it to topcoat flat latex which only needs about two weeks to fully harden, maybe a bit longer in the winter.

I agree Jester,, thanks for mentioning that, I forgot about that, First plane I used it I sprayed it over some satin finish grey from Lowes and it did want to fish eye a little,, I just wiped it down with denatured alcohol to take the shine off and it went on and stuck fine,, Over the Flat is the way to go,, this was my learning experience http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/seap...5-years-2.html

Thanks for the replies. Since I already have some Rust-oleum gloss on the model I think I will stick with Klasscote clear on this one. I will be trying the System Three on my next model.
