Taking Care of an Older Saito????

i purchased a plane not to long ago that had a Saito FA-80 in it. I had someone tell me the other day that saito's wear out quickly. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions on maintaining the motor for performance and longevity. Thank you so Much.

Quite the opposite--if cared for properly, saito's will yield many years of great performance. Just make sure you burn the recommended fuel (at least 15% nitro for this engine) and around 18-20% oil. Make sure you have it tuned with a tach as per the manual. There should always be a slight smoke trail coming out of the exhaust. If not, you're running on borrowed time!

if saito 's wore out quickly no one would be buying them.only way to wear out an engine quickly is not enough oil in the fuel, lean runs or no air filter and dirt being sucked into the engine.there is an initial wear in on four strokes where the valves need to be adjusted after a few runs and every so often they need to be checked but thats about it.do not forget to use after run oil.

After-run oil is tough to apply to four-strokes. I do it to all of my two strokes--I really don't know why, it's just something I do. However, with four strokes, putting after-run oil into the carb really doesn't do a whole lot. To oil the bearings, you really need to get it into the crankcase vent tube, which can be a real pain. I guess a syringe might help quite a bit, but I don't generally worry about it. I guess that's because I'm constantly using my four strokes. None of them will set for more than a month without being ran--during good weather.

I've had Saitos from 30 to 180 and all ran well and were user friendly. My 80 is one of my most dependable engines although it is not a "powerhouse"I ALWAYS USE AFTER RUN OIL - good quality air tool oil is far less expensive than what you get in a hobby shop and is suitable because it is specifically designed to dombat moisture in air compressors/air tools. Its a good idea to either drain your fuel tank or isolate it from the engine after flying and then run the engine dry .

I like my Saitos so much that I now have no 2 stroke engines - all either Saito or YS.
