Monokote/Lustrekote color match??

After masking and spraying my cowl on my new airplane, I realized the Insignia Blue Lustrekote paint is a very poor match to the Insignia Blue Monokote.[:@] I thought this stuff was supposed to match! Has anybody else had this problem?

Bass1,
Go to the hobby shop, roll a dice, and pick a can of paint. Sometimes they match, sometimes they don't. Wish I could tell you more what to do, but that just about sums it up for the this subject.

RE: Monokote/Lustrekote color match??

At one time where I worked I bought over a million dollers in paint from most of the major US mfgrs. I scheduled contract painting and supplied 3 different systems for mixining our own paint. Therefore it has always been a puzzle to me why Top Flite can't produce and sell a paint to match their MonoKote even though they advertise a perfect match. They lie. I've tried many times with many colors and have never found a Lustre Kote that was even close. If you need a good match take some Monokote to the hardware store and have them match it.

Sometimes differing lots of Monokote don't even match each other. No surprise that the paint will not match. Frustrating!

If you want to get an exact match, take a sample of the covering you will be actually using to a paint store and have them mix a quart of latex (quart is the smallest they will color match ). Spray the latex, let it dry/cure then clear coat it. A quart of custom mix latex will cost about $8 - $10.

Nelson's paints are fuel proof (with the cross linker ) and USUALLY a very close -> exact match, but 8 oz of paint and the cross linker is going to set you back about $23 with shipping

RE: Monokote/Lustrekote color match??

The quality control on Monokote and Lustrekote seems to vary widely.
Ive got two rolls of orange Monokote that arent even close to the
same color.

The only way I have ever got a decent color match with Lusterkote was if I used
Lustrekote white primer underneath the color coat. And only Lustrekote primer.
Other primers dont work.

This was done with several coats of Lustrekote white primer then the insignia blue. The custom mixing is out for now as I don't have any spraying equipment[:o]

Its hard to tell for sure from a photo but your insignia blue monokote
looks a LOT lighter than the roll I have here. Mine looks a lot closer
to your Lustrekote insignia blue.

Could be you got one of the ever increasing bad rolls of Monokote.
Its too bad they cant get a handle on the quality since the array
of colors is great. Ultracote is a lot more consistant.

Actually, for Lusterkote, that is a pretty good match.

Now you know one of the many reasons people are (or have) switched to Ultracote.

I find that the Ultracote paints are usually an exact match for their covering. In addition, the UC paint is not very particular on primers (a white primer is going to provide the best/truest color though) and it sprays WITHOUT SPITTING
