Spinner for Large Props
 

For those who fly large planes, is there a special cut spinner fot large props? let say 18x6. The reason I'm asking is because I'm building a 1/4 scale plane and I bought a 3 inch aluminum spinner from Great Planes, looks very nice, but it won't fit a large prop like the one I mentioned, the LHS only carries 2 sizes in aluminum and a bunch of plastic ones and I hate to order a bunch of diffrent spinners just to get the right one, so can someone point me into right direction to get the correct cut?

I always have to trim them out to fit the prop. Usually a knife cannot be controlled well enough. I use a rat tail file.

I have trimed plastic spinners, but not aluminum ones, is it safe to grind off unneeded material?

I use the rat tail on the aluminum jobs too. You want to make sure and not have any notches in the opening or a crack may develop. I use pencil lead to make the contact points show up so I can just take material off where it is needed to be removed. The spinner cannot touch the prop anywhere.

Rub the pencil lead on the prop and where the spinner touches the prop, there will be pencil lead on the spinner. That way you do not forget where it was touching. You work your way around the opening until you can snap the spinner in place and it not touch the prop any where.

Joe some spinners will have the larger cut , you have to look thru the listing .
Secondly , if you are building and you feel its worth it Gene Barton may have a custom spinner for you .
Example he sells 4 & 3/4 P40 spinners and will cut the slots for you .
Uncut HD aluminum $60 bucks , cut to your prop specs , mounted with screws , ready as is or add your paint $90.
I know he does 5" & 6" so I assume he will go larger

Tru Turn has 120 series and wide series spinners. This might just be what you are looking for.

I have the 2 3/4" dia. one and it has plenty of room for a 15x4 wide prop.

Tru Turn 3" Big Bird spinner will accomodate an APC 18x6W without any problems.
