Engine turning
 

Does anyone know how to do engine turning on aluminum.
I think it is also called damascusising. Anyway it is the swirls on aluminum similar to the way the cowl on the Spirit of St Louis looks. I have tried every type of dremel tool but they cut too deeply. My best luck has been with a rubber eraser, but as the eraser wears the size of the swirls changes. If anyone knows about this procedure it would be appreciated.

I have done it one time with good results and a instrument panel.
What I did is get some of he soft polishing tips for my Dremel get the Cone shaped ones and cut the tip flat smaller then the swirl size.
Now in a drill press where you can control the pressure lay down the part and swirl away, as the tip wears add pressure to keep the size the same.
A little practice and you can get a nice look

I use a dowel with a leather disk cut from an old belt glued on end ,don`t need to be perfect when glued on, just sand sides while in drill press. I use watered down fine valve grinding compound or the red rubbing compound. Some of that type finish on old air craft was done with a cup type wire brush , did it to cover hammer marks left from making cowling
