Valve adjustments on 4 stroke motors

Hey Guys,

Real quick question here. Adjusting the valves on a 4 stroke OS, hot or cold?

Thanks, Greg

Further to this, how do you know WHEN they need adjustment? Hard to start? Won't start?

I check them after the first hour of running after new or after the head has been re-installed for any reason. After that about every 10 - 25 hours of running time or after each season.

OK. Let me re-phrase. What do you look for (to know that they need adjustment)? Your answer tells me an example of when to do it but not what to look for on an older engine to know that it needs an adjustment.

It's not as if it's going to be pouring out clouds of smoke like a '59 caddy that has seen better days to know it needs a valve adjustment.

I'm a newb with 4s. Gimme a lesson. :D

Power will be reduced but will happen over a very long period. Good advice to check at the season end.

I was checking mine every 2 weeks. I also fly a lot (when I have something to fly). :D

Unless you're one of the fortunate few who can fly all the time, I recommend you simply make the adjustment a once-a-year maintenance item. I do it during the winter to help prevent cabin fever.

Hi can anyone tell me the correct method of setting the valve timing on a super custom 91 ? also has anyone had the gears on the crankshaft and the gears on the cam shaft jump damaging the gears and upsetting the vave timing, is this a common problem? Thanks briands.
