Electric retracts , what are they worth ?
 

I have been looking for a set of electric retracts for a project i am working on , and haven't found any for sale , until recently . I was talking to a fella at an auction this weekend , and he said he had a set of older Multicon trike gear that was in good working order and to make him an offer . I have no idea what these would be worth , and don't want to insult him with an offer that is too low . Anybody have any idea what these would be worth , or where i could buy something like this ?

Are you sure that you want 'electric' retracts as opposed to mechanical retracts? My question is based on my ignorance of the existence of any electric retracts, being familiar only with mechanical and air operated systems. If electric is indeed the right terminilogy and type, why do you want these in particular? (Just curious)

As to the offer, once you are sure that the retracts are the right size, etc., for your project (and that they actually work), make him any offer you want and don't be afraid to offend him. The worst thing that can happen is that he says 'No' and potentially make you a counter offer and you can then decide if you want to raise your offer or not. By him saying 'Make me an offer" he's using the gambit of car salesmen to have a customer suggest a price because normally the customer will make an offer that's higher than what the salesman/dealer will settle for. Keep in mind that you ran into this person at an auction, where he was hoping for bids - that always start low.

I used Kraft multicon electric retracts 25 years ago. They are very heavy and are super slow to cycle. It takes about 20 seconds to cycle, which isn't good if you have a flame out and need to get on the ground quickly. They are also big physically. The nose gear can be a real problem to find room to mount. They are only good for about 6 to 7 pound airplanes. I ran mine off a separate battery pack, just in case it got jammed and didn't make the up-down limits and drew massive current from the receiver battery.

Unless you "really, really" want these retracts, I'd stay away from them. Like all old radio equipment, they weren't very reliable either.

There are some guys planning to use them over at RCSB. I don't know of anyone that has actually put them in a model and flown it.

Every time I open up the airplanes forum there is a new advertiser called down and locked at the top. I haven't tried them but either Mike or Ken mentioned to me about looking at them at the RC show and they looked like a great product. Take a trip to there web site and see what you think.

and every retract thread ever started has been restarted by his advertising. relevant input to ongoing threads is one thing but some of these threads haven't been posted to in years.
