I own a pulse jet engine and am trying to decide on a airframe for it....any ideas out there???? Going for insane amounts of speed by the way!

Thanks

Talk to Bruce Tharpe at BTE. He has flown RC pulse jets.

Are RC Pulse Jet powered aircraft legal to fly in the US? You may want to check insurance coverage.

They are not legal in Canada.

There is a reason why they are not legal, they run HOT, Loud, Uncontrolable (No throttle), consume lots of gasoline and are dangerous to ignite - just to name a few reasons. [X(]

So if the plane is out of trim on it's maiden and you happen to crash with a gallon of gas on board that touches those cherry red tail pipes... just what kind of insurance do you think is going to keep you out of court? [:o]

I guess it more a question of where you fly them.

Check out this dual DynaJet powered model.

Do a search in the forum for "dynajet" and start thinking about what club is willing to lose their field if you start up a pulse jet there.

RE: Pulse jet plane wanted!!!?!??!?!?!

I checked out HIGHPLAINS link, and here's some highlights;

Q: Why is there metal on the sides of the fuselage?

A: Pulsejets get hot - very hot. If you let a Dynajet run static for 15 seconds or more it will begin to glow red, then orange. The thin aluminum is there to protect the wood fuselage from the heat. The best way to keep the engines cool is to get them moving; that's why it's important to start them quickly and get into the air.

Q: How do you land that thing?

A: Dynajets have no throttle, so every flight is made at full power and every landing is made dead-stick. ...

Q: Where do you fly?

A: You can't fly pulsejet-powered models just anywhere. They make so much noise that you could lose a club field in one flight. We like to take our models out to dry lakes in Nevada where you can't bother anybody, hit anything, or start any fires. You also have a limitless runway, which is nice for emergency landings.

Just the sort of thing that we all need in our neighbourhood to promote the hobby and become friends with the locals... [:'(]

Ease up on the guy. He is in Iowa for cryin out loud. They beg for something to break the silence out there. It might drown the sound of the corn growing or cows mooing. I even heard in IA suicide is redundant.[sm=bananahead.gif]

Wow, you actually HAVE one? So, ummmmm, can you send it to me for evaluation? I'd like to ummmmm, authorize it for RC use. YEA!

Just because the AMA will not cover you does not mean they are illegal.

heck, AMA requires a turbine waiver, but you can still fly a jet at a non AMA site without one.

I know of no laws that prevent you from flying a pulse jet.

IF you don't mind building your own from scratch, check with MJD over in the extreme speed prop planes forum. He recently bought a throttled pulse jet engine and is going to start building an airframe for it. Might be able to build along with him.

Illegal in Canada??? Well, well, well....just one more reason to add to the ever growing list of why the U.S. is better than Canada!
By the way my post topic is "Pulse jet plane wanted!!!?!??!?!?! " NOT "Are pulse jets legal" or "Will a club loose their field if I take a pulse jet there"!!!!! So please keep the responses topic related for me if at all possible! A big thank you to the posts thus far that have offered good help and links!

Out.

Hi Craig,

I well remember a mate who had a controlline model of a puse jet. Built from plans from an English magazine back about 1967. These things are incredibly LOUD!!! Please wear adequate hearing protection when you test the motor. Long story short, we ran the motor a couple of times on a test bench, the neighbours called the police. We then fitted to model and tried to fly. About 1/2 a lap and a bag of bits.

Good Luck,

Colin

Hi Craig

It can be done

Here is a video of a twin pulse jet RC model flown in Scotland last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e-Ar7gb4tQ

A guy called Roy Levers had a 4 pulse jet Vulcan in the UK many years ago. It was flown but rarely with all 4 running.

A dutchman called Joe Koullen was also on the show circuit for a while with some RC pulse jets in deltas.

Yea, I know it's OT and doesn't help the poster, but look at the temp of the pipes on this video at 50 seconds into the video!

For all of you that might be questioning pulse jets and their legallity....check this out!!!! [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/510-Q.pdf]ama pulse jet rules[/link] This is from the AMA.....
How ya like them apples?????!!!!!!

OldRookie 06-20-2007 06:41 PM

RE: Pulse jet plane wanted!!!?!??!?!?!

I don't like those apples.
I always have questioned the rule about the capability of the pilot to fly an airplane that is capable of 150 mph, when the plane intended for the pulse jet won't go over 100 mph.
Another one I don't agree with is the requirement of a rudder. WHAT FOR? This type of plane needs no rudder at all.
I have a set up with a Delta Vortex with a Dynajet.
