Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

Can I safely use a Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane (BH Models T-28 Trojan 60 ARF)?

Thank you,

Stuart

If you already have the FA-82 I would go for it. It should provide enough power for a BH Trojan for realistic flight performance.

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

Thank you very much…

I have not purchased an engine yet, but was considering between the Saito FA-82a $229.00 and the OS FS-91 II Surpass $229.00 (UltimateHobbies.com) The Saito has such a good rep and is almost as powerful but 4.30 oz lighter (see spec below).

So with the price being the same which one would be the best choice?

Saito FA-82a
General Specs:
- Bore: 1.135 (in.)
- Stroke: 0.802 (in.)
- Shaft: threaded
- Low RPM: 1800
- High RPM 10500
- HP: 1.500 hp@10000 RPM
- Weight: 16.00 oz.

OS FS-91 II Surpass
General Specs:
- Bore: 1.090 (in.)
- Stroke: 0.980 (in.)
- Shaft: 5/16 x 24 Thread
- Low RPM: 2000
- High RPM: 12000
- HP: 1.600 bhp@11000 RPM
- Weight: 21.30 oz.

Thank you for your help,

Stuart

229.oo is certainly a great price for the Saito 82. Where is it sold at that price?

Hi,

The website is www.UltimateHobbies.com; I purchased my Hanger 9 P-51 PTS RTF for $374.00 with free FedEx ground shipping. I ordered it on a Friday and received it Tuesday morning the packaging was fantastic and my P-51 arrived in perfect condition.

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

I just visited their site, some great prices. Certainly worth adding to my bookmarks.

I noticed though that the engine is out of stock. After watching the lengthy Hobby Lobby shell games(Senior Telemaster kits) I get a little skeptical of some of these sites.

For what it''s worth I own this engine and think it''s great. It was a long process breaking it in but now it seems like the engine starts as soon as it sees the starter in my hand (:-). I run 20/20 fuel and fly at approximately 4500 feet.

Thanks Don for your input, of course you make a good point, if it’s not in stock the best price in the world doesn’t mater… I will call and see what the ETA is on the Saito 82a, but I guess from what I’ve been reading I can’t go wrong with the OS 91 or Saito 82a. :D I have ordered there once before and was extremely happy.

I just ordered the BH models T-28 Trojan 60 ARF for $139 from the Hobby people and I hope I’ll be as happy with them as with ultimatehobbies.com.

I''ve just put together a Blackhorse Chipmunk 64" wing with A Saito 82a. Trust me, it pulls great :D

I can''t compare it with your other engine as I''ve never ran another glow engine but I seriously think you would love the Saito. It sounds amazing and starts great. I had a few teething probs but they are sorted and was just my inexperience.

My plane weighs about 7.5lb to 8lb

BTW, did I say it sounds great ;)

Please excuse the really poor quality vid (it was my wife's phone but just listen to it purr

Stuart, I have flown a H-9 AT-6 quite a bit with a Saito 82 and it does not lack power. Half throttle scale speeds or throttle up and pull giant loops. Not unlimited verticle by any means but enough to make it fun.
Email or PM me if you need a new in the box Saito 91 or a nice gently used 100

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

I have a Saito 82 with <20 flights and I''d be happy to sell it for $150.

It runs very well, I just don''t like the sloppy output from the vent nipple. I replaced it on my Tiger 60 with an OS 61FX, (the Saito had a bit more power).

PM me if interested.

Stuart:
If you have all the items for your plane except the engine, then you have this option:

Assamble your plane (servos in place and everything).

Put some weight in the nose (better if accuratly on the engine mount), the weight should be the same as one of your options (Saito 82 or OS 91), then see how it balances.

If you feel like you need more weight at the nose (which is the option of my choice because of the short nose of the plane) then go for the OS 91.

Otherwise would be a lighter need and the Saito 82 could be the option.

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

I recently purchased the new Hanger 9 Pawnee 40. It recommended the Saito 82, I have plane all put together and balancing it is a bit of a prob. Battery placed back as far as possible in the fuse. When setting plane on the Great Planes balancer it still is looking for 5ozs of weight on the tail. Does anyone have a better idea/

The only thing I can think of is to cut a section out of the bottom of the fuse as far back as possible so you can mount the battery if you have enough space to keep clear of the control rods/wires.

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

There is a thread of that particular plane here at RCUniverse and I understand that the location of the CG is confused because of the shape of the wings. I would check that thread before any attempt to add weight or cut something in the fuse (It is a really nice looking plane).

Thank you very much, It's nice to know there are fellow fliers out there that are willing to take the time to help. I will go with the 3 1/8 inch. but still seems like alot of tail weight.

Thank you very much, that is a great idea. [sm=idea.gif]

I had considered that very thought about the weight of the Saito 82 engine possibly being too light. In some the personal reviews of the BH Model T-28 using the Saito 91 they complained about having to add lead in the nose to get the CG correct. Like I said great idea… Thank You. Well I just purchased the OS 91 Surpass II from www.UltimateHobbies.com for $229 to my door. The Saito 82 was also $229 but they only have one coming in on Tuesday and so that did not seem very reliable to me.

But the purpose of the reply was to explain to you all how I came to make my decision…

I do this with computer parts a lot when two leading manufactures both have great products at about the same price with about the same features and benefits… I look at the instruction manuals and the one that’s superior wins my business.

Thanks everyone for all your great input,

God Bless and many Happy Landings,

Stuart

Well as fate would have it I ordered the OS 91 surpass II for the superior manual and mostly because the Saito 82a was not in stock. [:-] But on the day it was suppose to ship out, I noticed that www.Ultimate.Hobbies.com was listing the Saito 82a as In Stock! [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] So I called and they were glad to switch them out, no problem. [sm=shades_smile.gif]

A Saito 82a for $229 to my door! Way to go Ultimate Hobbies!!![sm=wink_smile.gif]

RE: Saito FA-82 on a 60 size plane ????

I hope you're not disappointed. Personally, I would have stuck with the .91 just because of the weight. On a .60 - 1.20 size plane, you're going to need the extra 5 ounces on the nose, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it needed even more to make the CG come out right. War birds (even the Mentor and Texan) are by nature heavy in the nose. If the CG is too far back, it's going to fly really crappy and unstable. The Saito .82 is great on a .40 - .60 size plane because of their weight. It will still fly your Trojan, just don't expect too much.

That was indeed a lucky break for you. I have OS and Saito four strokes. Compared to my OS I invested a lot more time (and fuel) in breaking in theSaito 82 but it is now my favorite engine. Best sound, easiest starting and great on idle.

I have yet to break in the Saito 125 I bought but I expect it to be of the same quality. I'm going to mount that one on my Spacewalker II (when I get around to building it). That's on the lower end of the recommended power range but I've never been a fan of overpowered planes. Fly it right or lose it (:-).

Don
