12V Gel Batteries

Can a regular 12V 1.5 amp battery charger be used to charge a 12V field battery that you use to run the power panels for glow plug igniter and fuel pump?

Yes, the gel cells are normally about 7 Ah, so if it is completely discharged, figure about 5 hours to charge the gel-cell at a rate of 1.5 amps.

My Scumacher automotive battery charger also has deep cycle and gel cell settings.

It works very well on my gell cells

my charger stops when charging batteries for my lawn mower, will it do the same for the gel cell?

I use a 9 amp gel cell for my flight box and charge it with a 1 amp / 2 amp sport charger.

I try to peek charge it as often as I can. I hook up a dc volt meter to it and watch the voltage level. When it peeks out its done, generally it drops about .3 to .4 volts and that tells me its peeked. There can be a veneration less than .3 to .4 volts when charging, that's why I go .3 to .4 drop before I cut it off.

My gel cells last a long time, so I know what I am doing is good.

I would think it should. You can hook up a DC voltmeter as it charges and see if it does. Like I said before, look for a .3 to .4 volt drop and then its charged.

My Schumacher SC1200A computerized automotive type charger stops and goes to trickle on a gel cell just like it does on my car battery

I only run it on 2 amps

I charge my lawn tractor battery that I use for starting model engines at 2 amps on the regular autoomotive battery setting. It stops and goes to trickle there also.

Most gell cells (all of the ones I've ever seen) recommend a maximum charge rate of 0.1C. Pb batteries can easily be ruined by to fast a charge as well as to deep a discharge. The typical 12 volt Pb (Gell cell or wet cell) will be at 13.7 volts when fully charged. Always recharge as soon as the open circuit voltage is at 11 volts, better yet do not let it get quite that low as deterioration starts to occur at that voltage level. You can find some good tips on Pb battery care at http://www.hangtimes.com/redsbatteryclinic.html

what do you mean, the ones you have seen, have you had gel cells
What is .01C on a 9 amp batter, is that .09 amps?.

I have had gel cels for some times. I charge them with 1 to 2 amp sport chargers and it works fine.

If you get a charger that peeks out and stops charging, thats fine.

This Hobbico wall wart is 1.2A

this Hobbico is .6A and I have used it for years and never had a problem

ya, the .6 amp should be good. It will charge over nite.

I generally charge a 1 amp, but I watch the voltage and shut it down at peek. Its the over charging that kills them.

could I just use my Thunder AC6 charger since it can do PB batteries?

I would follow its performance with a voltmeter and make sure it works as described for gell cells in the earlier post
