Any used parachutes left for sale?  I am looking for one the size of RCSkydiving's larger "Hangtime" chute, but the MicroDiver chute would probably be OK.<div>

You could just go to our website and order an Hangtime chute. Nobody elses chute here is as big as the Hangtime's.

I just might.. what I really need is one that can handle a payload of ~1.5 kg. But for the price of the Hangtime chute I miight rather try to make one myself. Its for a school project. There's little $ but a whole summer quarter of time.

Our diver weighs in at 3.5 lbs, so you will be almost perfect in payload as we are. I know they are pricey but once you see one that all goes away. It's hard to look at a website and see the quality and craftsmanship that goes into these chutes. I actually have alot of schools using these for projects of dropping 5 to 6 lbs., we actually make them a special version of this chute so it holds up better under the extra weight. Let me know if or what you decide.

I wish I could just tell them to buy it but we're going to need $ for other things too, this is for a guided payload recovery project - for high altitude balloon payloads.

It would be convenient if you sold plans, because the biggest issue to me is having the right shape of canopy. the labor is free.

RE: More Skydiver Stuff Available!!

The Naval Academy does this about every year with 3 parachutes. Been making theres for about 5 years now. I caught on with 2 other Academy's as well once the word got around. The kids have sent me some results and the really were interesting. It was amazing how accurate you can guide a parachute down with electronics instead of human interaction. Sorry I don't sell kits though, it would be very rough for someone to take a kit and build a chute for the first time and get it to fly correctly.

Do you have a link to this? I'm not sure what you mean, do they release plans or kits?

I found this inspiring;

But notice how his design is completely flat - so the arched shape of the canopy would come from setting the lines so that it arches, meaning more slack in the fabric of the lower part. I don't think that would help inflation/stability. I think I might do what he did but modify it to be arched. I have some experience making 3D models of parachutes (my first job was making 3D models for this; http://www.parasim.com/ though that was 15 years ago).

if it doesn't go well I'll probably order a chute from Dave Naylor then.

FYI basically what I'm trying to do is make a scale model of this system;

Hi rwilke, The chutes gain there arch when all the lines are pulled together at the riser... I do have some used chutes that i may be willing to work with you on.. Do you have a certain line length you need to work with?? I just worked with a group at our University here on a project trying to control the recovery of the electronic equipment and ballon for an air quality testing program.. The problem was getting the chute to deploy without tangling with the ballon... It worked great when it did open and with the GPS system i was able to bring it back to within 300 to 400 yds of us each time...

This chute is complete with lines.. Used with a 3 to 4 lb jumper..

The university's are not making them, they are using my chutes as projects to do what you want to do.

If you look through Atair's website you will find pictures of our chutes. I have made 20+ canopies for them, alot of which they could not show me pictures of due to working with the government. Alot of them were bright orange but then we got into making flat gray ones, better to not ask questions at that point.

What you are attempting to do is very common. The statistics the Navay Achademy sent me they did 100 jumps manually and 100 jumps with electronic control, with electronic control the worst jump they had was 8 feet off the target!!!!

RE: More Skydiver Stuff Available!!

That's interesting! Small world. Yeah grey canopies, I guess that's camouflage against an overcast sky.

Do you know where I could find info about that US Naval Academy study? I tried searching usna.edu but couldn't find it. I could cite it in my report if I found a copy of their paper.
Closest I could find was in this newsletter;
http://www.nps.edu/research/newsletters/june2002.pdf
but they only seemed to have used round chutes.

I also just stumbled across this paper which is very useful;
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a525801.pdf
Apparently what I'm going for right now is called "Automatic trim" mode. I set up the controller to turn servos to counteract roll/pitch changes. Tuesday we'll drop it off the building 10x again and see how it works.
