I know Ofna makes a 1/8th scale buggy 2 speed mod. I do not know whether it will fit the Axis or not because it's made for the Hyper 7. Here's a link to the page: http://www.ofna.com/h7opt.html

Here's a pic of the setup:

If you still have questions you can call them.

You can use the one from the Thunder Quake but it is difficult to find. However, if you decided to use the one from ofna, I am sure you can do it too as I had just installed one in a Kyosho Tuggy. Just that you have to relocate the fuel tank as the 2 speed clutch bell is too long and you also need to grind off a bit of the radio tray to have clearence for the larger spur on the 1st gear. As for the engine, you should be able to drop in any big block. One comment though, unless you are into drag or doing a truggy conversion, the traction lost will exceed the benefit you gain from a 2 speed. My 2 cents.

How is the traction lost? Is it because the 2 speed eliminates the center diff?

You could just get a nice .21 engine and not a bigger engine.

As far as traction loss, it definitely will be. However, the higher traction of the surface, the more benefit the 2 speed will have and its a compromise you have to make. Like I said, its no good for a buggy but rather for a drag or truggy conversion. I will update on how the 2 speed goes.
