RE: Airboat Challenge
Gentlemen, I do beleive you all hit on a key note, and that is the fun factor. Generally the reason anyone gets into any sport is for the fun. I enjoy running boats and going fast but the most fun is in the designing and building of the boats. No matter what kind it is, it's still fun. There is a certain satisfaction in making something and having it work, and the "work" part of it isn't really that big of deal, cause if it doesn't you can tweak on it until it does. I am a millwright by trade and I like to fix and make things, it doesn't matter what it is, it could be anything. It's the creating and the problem solving that I enjoy. With my new hull still in the layout stage I find myself straying from trail, I've been considering a WIG and even coming up with a SPAD airboat. So the hull I started laying out is sitting there waiting until I decide what I'm going to do. And that's the beauty of what we're doing here, the only limitation is a persons imagination. So I say..."damn the torpedos, full speed ahead". Brother

RE: Airboat Challenge
Hi guys,
I totaly agree with the sentiment that the main goal is to have fun, and the beauty of airboats is that you don't have to conform to any pre-determined rules about shape, size, engine, etc. etc. I think most of us would just like to create our own mouse trap; whether or not it's better is of no concern... The airboat "challenge" is not meant to upset the organized boat racing fraternity, just a friendly reminder that there are other ways to go fast, and on a low budget at that! Even a very high speed airboat has no expensive components, in fact I would prefer to use a sport engine instead of a speed engine, to further emphasize the low drag potential of an airboat, at least on the straight-away. Certainly we all have different "needs for speed", and speed doesn't automatically equate with "fun". The scale hydro project that Slayer has going may be more for speed than for jumping, but it looks like fun to me...

RE: Airboat Challenge
Yeah ... but ya know something ? THats whats GREAT about PLAY BOATERS and AIRBOATING ...
( shhhh .... don't tell anyone , but we an also take the good with the bad .... )
Naw ... the only thing he started was to make us all realize that as a diversified group of RC'ers , we are unique , segregated RC outcasts , not accepted in airplanes , or the boating ,and most of us are CHEAP AS HELL !
But .... thats probably what makes this hobby so GREAT !
It's
ALL

Hmmm.....Sort of looks like the outer sponsons and hull of a scale hydro. Three piece construction, 2 sides and a centre tunnel section ?
Just my guess

The 2 pics is almost the complete hull. There will not be much to it. Slayer you have a good idea, but you are adding in too much. I will do a little more this afternoon and get some more pics up. Terbo, I made a little change in it, shorten it down to 27". Hopefully this thing will have a little speed to it.

RE: RE: Airboat Challenge
I'm new here, but have been an airboat enthusiast for a long, long time. Mostly, 1/2A stuff. This is a great forum for what we do. I even recognize du-groundeffect. We met at the NW R/C show a few years back.
I'm anxiously awaiting more posted results from Slayer and Haljmac on their projects!
As far as an airboat challenge, I am in agreement with all who have posted. It should be fun and designed specifically around the unique capabilities of airboats. But, for those who are interested, I thought I would just throw something out to consider. I do need to verify it though, as I haven't checked the NAMBA rule book lately.
If I remember correctly, I believe there is (or was) an exception in the NAMBA rules that allows air propeller driven boats to compete in the 0-3.5CC class only. They would have to compete against water propeller driven boats. They call it their "A" class. If so, for those that are after absolute straightline speed, I could see an airboat being a viable contender for their 1/16th mile straightaway records event.
Does anyone have access to a NAMBA rule book? I checked their web site, but did not find any rules. Like I said, that is how the rule "was" written, but I don't know if it has been changed.

RE: RE: Airboat Challenge
I am reposting a pic from an older topic that most may not have seen.........
This is from Wile E. Coyote of Milan, Italy and was posted back on 11-16-03. He stated that with an OS LA it did about 60 kph.
You will have to look at the front of the hull CLOSELY to distinguis how the bow is designed. It is hard to see with it being a red hull placed on a red table. The front, for the lack of a better term, is designed as a splash guard. Look at the bottom of the front sponsons and you can distinguish a full width plate, like a false bottom.

RE: RE: Airboat Challenge
I have no problem with the District 1 link at all.
It is the District 3 link that I have the following problems.......
These are problems that Acrobat Reader show;
the 1st one to pop up is....
There was an error processing a page. A font contains a bad CMap/Encoding
the 2nd one to pop up is....
This file contains information not understood by the viewer
the 3rd error message to pop up is....
Could not find the ColorSpace named 'CS1'
All three of these Acrobat Reader error pop-ups happen every time on the Dist 3 link for me, but then no problems with the other link.
I'm stumped.....
