Default Going to my local hardware store to get....

2" foam for my first ELECTRIC airboat! I will be using 8 cells and a GWS 350 motor with the GWS D frive and a 1260 prop. I was thinking 12X26" for the dementions for the foam. Is this a good size? Can anyone help me out with an electric design?

I found out that the 2" foam has foil stuff on both sides! Is this ok? Can I tek it off or should I leave it on? Where else can I get foam?

Hopefully you can find some foam without the alluminum coating. My local hardware store (Lowe's) carries blue board and I believe Home Depot carries pink. I haven't looked at the aluminum coated foam in a while but what I remember of it is that the foam is kind of white or yellow. I don't know how well it will shape (maybe one of the other guys in here could shed some light). I would call around. The blue or pink foam insulation board is what most of us use in here but that doesn't mean it's the only stuff that will work.

I bought a 4' x 8' sheet of 2" at the Depot for $ 14.00- I'd sell ya some- but I'm kinda saving the big chunk I have left for a weedeater motor thats waiting for for a home.

I don't know enough about electrics to know what capabilities that motor setup has or how well it will turn that prop. The hull size you are suggesting up there is the typical sizing for a .40-.46 nitro motor. It should work out just fine for you...it may end up too top heavy depending on how high you have to mount the motor for the prop to clear in which case addin' a little bit of width would help.

The great thing about airboats and building from scratch is there is no one right way or setup of doing things, they are also relatively inexpensive so if you find a design flaw it's not too hard on the wallet.

Looking forward to seeing progress pics on this project...who knows maybe an electric will be in my future.

The 350 is a small motor. Much smaller than a regular 05 can motor that is most common.

The size you mention will work, but is rather large for that motor. You won't get much speed out of it with that size hull due to water drag.

A more suitable size would be like my 1/2A hulls. Around 7-9" wide and 17-20" in length. The power output of the 350 is close to that of a 1/2A engine.

I have hulls in the 12 x 26 size range and they are powered by .18 and .28 size nitro engines.

What is the diameter of the prop you want to use?

Also be aware that not all motors of that size will last long running 9.6v. It may be rated to that voltage, but the brushes will burn up before long. I have run 6v rated Speed 400 motors on 7 cells in my inboard micro monohulls and they last a season.

I also have a himaxx 2025 4200 brushless that I can put on there. I would test it out I have every prop from 8-12"

pro27, have you ever checked out MicroHydros.com for your micro R/Cs? Also, do you have pics of your micro monos? I used to have a BBY War Zone Jr. chopped down and running a speed 400 with 8 cells and I also had a Rowan Dinning rigger.

Let me know.
Thanks.

Mark, another co-inky-dink, Ned is the one who got me started in the Fast Electric boats. He also helped me decide which boat to chop for my first micro, he is a good man. Also, e-mail me at [email protected] because I am going to buy it off of you. Let me know.
Thanks.
