Just figured that , if , no-one else has discovered this yet , CELOTEX makes an insulation board ( for the outside of your house ) that is POLY foam AND has a SUPER thin fiberglass coating on BOTH sides . Sells for a little more than the other foam boards , BUT , is well worth it .
Why ? because you CAN use the regular POLY resin fibreglass that ALL your auto parts stores sell .
There is NO melting , bubbling AND , it ends up , after putting a THIN coating of poly resin to it , to be as strong as some of my pre- made ( manufactured ) built fibreglass hulls .
here is small piece so you can see what it looks like .
Again , you CAN use poly resins on this with NO ill effects .
For those in the midwest , I picked this up at MENARDS .

( oh yeah , it comes in a LARGE variety of different thickness's also . )

The foam is VERY dense also . By it self , I can stand on it , without denting it in ( I weigh 170 lbs ) AND it is VERY lightweight . Lighter than the amount of wood . if I were to build two identical boats , one made out of this and one from wood , this one would be FAR less in weight .

I went to my local home depot and tried looking for the stuff you found. It sounds interesting enough for a looksee. I had no luck so I went for the ever popular pink foam. Sounds like it would make a killer flat bottom without all the work. Keep us posted on your next build with this material.

Hey Terbo, I've seen this foam before, it was being removed from a store that was being remodeled. I will have to look in my area to see if it can be found. Has anyone out there tried using gorilla glue on foam? I tried it last night and found that I could glue wood to foam and foam to foam. It works very well, the nice thing is on foam to foam it doesn't leave a hard glue line. It cuts and sands as easily as the foam.

GORILLA GLUE , that icky gloppy thick , nasty looking dark brqwn stuff that works WONDERS on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING ... yep ... never leave home without it ... ( shoot , better than 100 mph duct tape .... LOL )
Yes , I use that a LOT - seriously ... just make sure to spit on one of the pieces before adding the glue and then join together ... wait about 15 minutes , she starts to cure and then after about an hour , she is REALLY starting to grab . Over night and its set ...SUPER hold too , in addition to easy sanding .

Don't use that product if you want it to seal foam. It foams and I hate it. just my 2 cents.

I LOVE THAT STUFF ! Especially for gluing wood with gaps between the joints.

Hello Asmithnc, How does it create problems with sealing? I was planning on using it on my canard hull... at least I think it will be a canard, the sponsons won't be typical of that style hull. They will have to be shaped to allow lateral movement. Will that negate it's classification as a canard?

What I think he meant was do not depend on it for the sole main product for sealing . The stuff bonds SUPER , and it does indeed foam/expand , but is also sandable and easier than resins to finish , and then , simply run yourself a thing coat of resin over the seam after sanding and your done .
make sure to clamp your pieces, as this WILL move them , if not clamped due to the slight bit of foam expansion while curing

Ok, if you read the directions it says to clam. So it is used to bond only. Gap filling, it might be ok ( I've never used it for that). Now for sealing it sucks, This produst expands as it dries and little air bubbles are all over the place. Once sanded they will repture and pin holes are left. I did this and I will never use it again for sealing. Stick with resin for the sealer.


Question has anyone found out it it will with stand nitro fuel.

I was refering to using it as a bonding agent. I've been looking for something that won't leave a hard glue line when I bond foam to foam. I'm thinking of three dimensional hulls.

Back to the foam for a min. Does anyone know what the name of that stuff is called? I'll need more foam before long, might get me some of that stuff.

I believe it's called Polystyrene foam, if you go to Lowe's just tell them you want high density foam. It will be either pink or blue.

Terbo, what is the thickest this stuff comes in? Is it much heavier? I havent found it yet. But I am not giving up.
