I think I just bought an Air Boat?
Hi,
I just bought this boat:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=5963923307
From the bottom of it, I'm guessing it is an Air Boat, don't look like anything else.
Looks almost done but the engine stand/mount and covering the top up. To cover the top up, I'm thinking of using Wood Door Skin? And 1/8" wood for the Engine Stand/Mount.
I'm on a low budget and have a Nitro Engine from early to mid 70's; it's a .049 Cox Engine. It hasn't been ran in over 25 years and not sure if it will now. A long time back I asked about the engine and it will probably need a new Glow Plug. It already has a prop on it, as it was ran in an airplane. It does not have any Throttle Control, which might be a problem - But I'm not going to be running anywhere with other boaters or swimmers.... or atleast not yet. Will this engine be powerful enough for the hull I just bought (28 in. x 10 in.)? If not, what kind of engine do you recomend, remember I'm on a small budget. Is there a way to turn the engine into a Throttle Controled one?
Any help will be appreciated. Since I just bought the hull an hour ago, the picture in the Ebay auction is all I have to show.
Thanks! [8D]

Welcome to the wonderful world of airboating! Your not too far from me, we should get together sometime?
The .049 won't be enough motor for that boat. I run 40's and 46's on my 26"x13" hulls.
I would say use a 40 or 46. This will allow you to run dry ground also.

Thanks for the reply. Yea, we should get together and run some Air Boats. Any other Boaters down there?
What about a OS Max 40 Engine? Is that on the small size for the airbot, or about right?
Thanks

There are airboaters everywhere here in Florida. There is about around 10 boats here in Okeechobee alone. You can check out the MABA section at www.rcairboats.net for more information.
The 40 would be the smallest I would use. It may be a little handicapped on dry ground but on water it will be fine.

RE: I think I just bought an Air Boat?
Thanks Chris!
After getting the hull today and looking at it, then doing some research I found out it is a Dumas Swamp Buggy, you can see a picture and stats here: http://www.geocities.com/rcairboat78/manufacboats.html (About the Middle). The hull is done, I just need to buy some wood (Balsa?) for the top of it and add the engine stand.
My question is that is says an engine size of .19-.21.... Should I go with one of those engines, or still get a .60 size engine?
Thanks!

I have yet to buy or run a kit boat, and unaware of actually how they run and handle. I am unable to recommend an alternative motor size. I'm sure someone here may be able to help you out.
Although....if the mfg recommends a 19-21. I would think that a .30 size would bring it to life.

RE: I think I just bought an Air Boat?
Thanks again for the reply Chris!
I had the itch and bought a Fox Gold Cup .40bb Engine. I can't see how this would move much with anything less, atleast on land. I also bought 2 gas tanks.
Now the only thing I need is a little wood, fuel, and radio gear and I'm ready to go.
Will keep an update.
How'd you get through with the Storm last night Chris?

RE: I think I just bought an Air Boat?
I built and still have one of those. The rudder was supposed to be about 8" x 4" and mounts on the outrigger off the transom. I found mine didn't steer too well, maybe because it was under-powered, and maybe because of the 3 strakes / ribs down the bottom of the hull.
It is a good little boat, but way too heavy. It was designed really strong, and will handle lots of power and abuse. I started with a .21, and it was way too slow. I upped to a .28, but never got the motor broke in right. and it was still too slow. A .32 would likely be okay for water, but I imagine a .40 would rock. It may get a little tippy though, so be prepared to do some mods.
