Default 1st airboat build (w/ pics)

the overall length is 23 inches the width is 10 inches. the sides are 1/8th inch basswood and the inner stringers(?) are 1/8th inch balsa. the bulk heads on top are one inch balsa in hight and the bulkheads on the bottom i just added scrap balsa to strenghten it. the fin suport is 1/4 inch basswod and the rudders are made from balsa shaped to a point in the back like an aleron.

for the hull bottom i am useing 1/16 inch by 4 inch basswood on the sides and a 3/32 by 2 inch section down the center for added strength. same for the hull top.

the powerplant was going to be a 480 speed with a 3:1 ratio gearbox spining a 10 x8 prop running off a 9 cell 10.8v 1000mAh nickle MH batt pack.

im starting to think thats not nearly enuff power for a fun time. i might be wrong haha but i doubt it. any ways what size nitro power plant would be best for a boat of this size.

Nice work!! [8D][8D]

Is the A .40 or .46 would make this boat "peppy!" [8D][8D]

maybe you could use a brushless power source

https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITED...idProduct=4709

its only 20$ and all you need is a 3 cell lipo (nimh would be too heavy)....(you can also buy lipo at that site

https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITED...idProduct=2045

someone used this motor and said it put out about 600 grams of thrust on a 3s lipo

i all ready have everything neccery to run nitro like a starter motor, 12v bat, fuel pump and glow starter. im not loking forward to spend money on blancers and chargers for the lipos. does anyone think the 480 brushed motor will be decent.

here are the rudders in more detail. they are on little plastic hinges. the hinges are a DOBRO product i think. they were like 60 something cents and they are awsome.

i didnt really make any plans for it. just what looked good to my eye

the 480 wont have enough power...a small nitro (like a .10 or .12) would probably have enough power to scoot this thing along pretty fast...as long as you keep building it light, youll be fine...the only thing with nitro is that over time (even with a protective polyester coating) they will deteriorate the condition of the hull...

ull need a 600 or similar to power that big of a boat. if you use a 480 id go with a 16x8-10 hull

what about a 380 or 400 size brushless? I think if you were willing to invest in a cheap setup you would be fine running it off some light nimh (1/3A size or so) without having to go lipo

yeah thanks for all the advice everyone. i think i will glass this hull and put a huge honking nitro on it and make a little hull for the electric set up i have.

has any one tryed making a hull out of paper mache. im going to try that for a quick electric fix when im working on and glassing my "big boat"

use white insulation foam and just epoxy coat it for a quick cheap hull!!you can even use yacht varnish instead for running on water.
