Hi all... I got that Foam(Spray) on Hand here also,So we`ll see, maybe I`ll go that route yet..The Denser it is ,the better resistance for impacts..I just droped the Engine from about 4 inches over the hulls` bottom (Butter fingers ) and that was enough to ding it..[X(]..The more I think of the foam, the more I like the Idea(dual purpose)..

..Vamp, I don`t think I`ll have problems with Glitching.. A metal Aerial (TV Antennae, LOL) on a Airboat ? I``ve never seen that before, can you post links to the Metal and the Plastic Aerials, you got my curiosity..

Careful on what type of spray foam you use. Most of that stuff acts like a sponge when dry, especially if you cut it. I think a minimal expanding closed cell foam would be a 2nd choice to regular white styrofoam chunks.

And man...that boat is lookin' swEEt!

Good thought Crispy.

I sanded my foam, opening some of the pores, but sealed it with a heavy dose of epoxy, not thinking that I may want to seal it, but to help the sponson tops stick better.

By the way, I used the Hobby Foam from my LHS.

Thanks you Guys.It makes me glad that some people are interested in the "project",and this thread is not just for my own entertainment..LOL
You Know I think you guys are completely correct about the foam Sucking/Sopping up water .I restored a few, Full scale, "Stingray, SideWinder, and Cobra",(Cool Names) Ski-boats...That foam was a major Fault/Flaw in all of those Boats. The problem was, They used the 2 component Foam mixture ,that was poured into the Hull, and the assemblers then used a Guitar String type of saw, to cut the foam ,flush, down to the Height of the False Floor..The main Beam, on the Bottom of the Hull ,was surrounded by that foam also..What would happen here, is the glass encapsulated plywood floor, would start to get water-logged due to the thin Glass covering the floor, would hairline fracture/crack...Speed it up with our Northern Weather (Freeze, Thaw)..These Boats were Manufactured both in California ,and up here in the province of Ontario Canada Late 1960`s to about 1980`ish..All the Boats, that I`ve restored had about 400-500lbs of Water logged Foam ,and Rotted wood sitting in those hulls.. Once the Water got below the false Floor, there was no way for it to be drained, without drilling a hole in the Hull ,exactly where you don`t want a hole .. When I rebuild these Boats I use the Blue and Pink Foam.It can never Rot /Saturate with water..The Wood ,well thats another story,I guess, but I definately slow down the process for the 2`nd stage of the Boats life (Re-incarnation)..The Boats I fixed up were about 30 years old. They all got split, Deck from Hull. New Beams ,Transoms, Floors and Mid-way Bulkheads encapsulated and Glassed in ,and then the deck re-attached..The Hulls are fast, the Boats are sleek , and become real Nice Drivers again, when you Take all the Extra weight out of it..I would think there`s lots` of these boats State-side needing Attention(same problem)..The last one I bought,(Stingray) Cost me $600.00 and came with an easy-loader trailer. The trailer was worth that much..

I`ll find some pics.later on, and show just how much Surgery was/is needed to replace that foam..Guys`,You know, again,, if it wasn`t for a bunch of Ideas floating around in here..I wouldn`t have thought twice about the Foam .The worst thing is,I knew about this problem, and it totally Slipped my mind.....Old Tymers (Alzhymers) Disease ,I guess..LOL

Heres a pic., of a page ,from a Brochure, for an Idea of the Boats I`m talking about .They were all basically The same Boat with slight Changes.

A bit of info about Cutting/Sanding Carbon Fiber..Much more can be learned, by doing an internet search, and a little studying..I hope, I didn`t sound like I was talking down to anyone. This is a Hobby, and sometimes a person forgets the dangers of the products that we all use .From Building, to Operating our RC Vehicles, there`s a lot of safety precautions that need to remembered, and, it is very easy to forget about the little things that can cause BIG problems..I`m just as Guilty, as the next Guy for letting seemingly innocent things slip, from time, to time..All a person can do, is Try, to not overlook the Obvious, and Look out for the Guy next to you,as well as yourself..It seems sometimes, Danger Blatently, stares us Right Smack Dab in the face, but ,it`s just to Darn Close, to actually see it ! ..LoL

Another part of this RC Hobby that I like, is the Replicating of Graphics, and making decals. The majority of the old warbirds usually have something unique on them..
..Been thinking over, what to put for a Graphic/Name on this Aluminum Jobbie for a while..So I put this together today ,some of you might recognize the Mascot..It`s pretty appropriate for this boat..

Hi D Bronk nice to see you back, thought you had vanished, cant answer for everybody but i wasnt bored at all.
Is that a big nig engine you have bolted to the engine mount, if so is it the RC version or the non.
I have one and they are such powereful little suckers, i used mine for a lift fan in a hovercraft, but its not Rc so i couldnt control it,so it gave too much lift.
Great in an airboat though.

Hi All..

..crispyspa ,I don`t think I`m going to give a Time line.It just depresses me when the date comes and goes..I will finish this boat, before, the Boogie Contest project though..So ,I`ll keep Chuggin` away, at `er..

..rickster3057..Yes it`s a Norvel Big Mig 0.061" Sport, with Revlite Technology..I did a few minor mods to it.Have a few other small things/parts I want to do/add to it yet..Aiming for a Bitmore Rpms from the test chart I made a while ago..The chart is tests I did with this engine when new and nothing done to it, only 4 ounces of fuel through it,before testing..I haven`t re-tested since, and only another 4 ounces through it since the test.A total of 12 ounces of fuel through it since it came out of the Box..I love these engines..I have a couple 0.074" BigMigs, very nice engines also..If anyone happens to see these engines at your local Hobby shop for Sale, and you don`t want them for yourselves,Please let me know.I`m looking for a couple more to add to the Stable..The chart shows shims ,that`s the shims at the top of cylinder.. Rick, I think you can still get a carb for your engine, and the carbs are not overly engineered, but, they work Extremly well .Check the video to see what I mean.A guy I know has an Exhaust throttle that works as good as the throttle carb..There`s a video of that also.Kind of impressive ,He`s also Diesel converting these Little engines..I`ll see if I can find it(vids) this evening.

http://media.putfile.com/Throttle-Test Vid at the end of it`s, 2`nd,2 ounce tank of fuel.. Oh,and my Test stand, that's patent pending so no trying to market it,OK ?

http://media.putfile.com/0061--BigMig during break-in (I think) some four stroking, so, it must be..Takes a long time for my Dial-up to download.

..Dad,your at the right end of the boat, with your guess..I`ll have those parts finished up and installed ,in an Hour, and I`ll post pics of them sitting where they belong..

I was grinding the overhangs on these Gussets and daydreaming at the same time ..Not Good.. I trimmed the first one all right ,Second one, I over heated it, and lost the bond .I had to redo it [:@]..Well, I thought I might as well take a tour to the City ,and go pick up some more supplies for the Contest Board. Also went to one of my Favorite Stores. It`s a Surplus store(Big).I Got a Steal of a Deal, that I just couldn`t Pass by A chainsaw powerhead, almost jumped into the Car with me. I think ,I have to stay out of these Shops..,and go back to mail order would be, much Cheaper..LOL

Default RE: My 1`st Scratch Built Airboat,,EVER !!

The Good News, is I didn’t get any further along with the Rudder mount before Realizing, it wasn’t going to work ,with the Rest of my plans.. LOL.. The other Good news is, I managed to make, and Bond something else to the Boat ,without it Delaminating like my Gusset did ,at the Transom yesterday.. More Good News.. I think I have the Lower, Floating Rudder pivots Figured out.. Last of the Bad news, I will have to make the part, and Weld some of the Parts together..[:@] Oh well, It could have been worse, Like, I could have accidentally stepped on it, Repetitively, until it resembled a Dance Floor..

If the upper holes are loose enoughor ovaled slightly you might be able to get away with it. I have had some pretty sloppy hinges work for me in the past - tight tolerence there is not a critical issue - or you could drill them REALLY oversize and use silicone tube over your rudder post ??
Looks pretty good to me - and the thrust angle usually isn't that much - I'd go with it.
