Paint Question

Okay folks, my question has probably been asked a million times, but I am unable to find it.
What kind of nitro-proof paint do I need for my new raw wood airboat ? I want to brush it on.
Brand, type, location, availability...just the facts.

Thank you.

RE: Paint Question

I haven't painted any of my boats, as I wanted the wood grain to show so no paint info from me, but I have used a few different polyurethanes and epoxy resin for a clear coat. Epoxy is pretty tough stuff and holds up well. Some resins may soften when kept in constant contact with raw fuel for a length of time, but I didnt have any problems with the stuff I used (Pacer Z-Poxy 30min finish resin). Both oil based and waterbased polyurethanes hole up quite well also. The finish may cloud a little if fuel sits on it for a minute, but the clouding goes away. If you are set on painting, I would think any Epoxy or Enamel paint will hold up well. There are some model aircraft paints that are easy to use and are fuel proof too.

Your regular off the shelf spray paints and the like are probably not going to hold up well.

By the way - how did your build go? Any pictures of it?

RE: Paint Question

Hi T,
I have been plucking along with my project, but I went a different route sorta. The majer difference being
the deck...I went with a flat deck and one peice left and right hull fronts (lack of proper name). I have
pictures of the build process, just not ready to post them yet. Tonight I will have the deck installed, then
after that I'll post pictures of what I have so far. But I'll tell you that it measures 36"X18"X3" high with a
12" rake. I'm now researching the paint aspect of it as you can tell.

RE: Paint Question

Try Krylon spray paint. I used some that held up to 50% raw nitro fuel. Walmart or hardware store should have it. Interior/exterior paint.
