hovercraft go
hey
Man, I dont know yet!!!!!! i got the thing all built, and now i am afraid to go run it cuz i cant find a good place that doesnt have obstacles, etc. and i know i am going to sell it to buy a large radio controlled sailboat, so i dont want to hurt it. the engine fired up well, and the thing looks like it will be a blast, but kayak fishing and work have just gotten in the way. i will let you know how it goes as soon as i get it out. it is on the charger and ready for me to take out. this thing has a fairly unique skirt. First of all, there is a tire inner tube that runs along the underside, with a valve and all that you inflate for some positive flotation and skirt help. Then the skirt is a half tube connecting the outer edge of the craft and an inner edge. there are holes in the skirt that spills air toward the inside of the half tube, and it escapes under the skirt and thats what floats it on a cushion of air. will try to post some additional pics soon. Yeah, Its gonna be a separate engine for lift.
JB, thanx, Im trying to figure out what woudl be best for a real hovercraft skirt and mineaturize it. I do plan on making a real one sometime.
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showth...hreadid=203334
is one I made just for fun. its really underpowered to hold any more weight on it.

i just a hoover craft from my dad, that needs a lot of work (been sitting for 17 years in a shed with the gas motor attached)
wonder if anyone could help out on building or finding a new skirt for it.
need to find out what kind of craft its
i believe it has been hand made out of wood with a foam bottom, and a Enya 60-||| model# 7033 with prop and carb no air filter or glow strater and all electronics. i will try to post pics

Mine is the SK-5 model. I painted mine in Army colors and used the supplied
decals. I love it!!!!!!!!
It is very simple to build, huge (the dimensions don't do it justice until
you actually see it in person), and fast. The kit includes everything
you'll need except for a radio, battery, ESC with reverse and one standard
servo. It even includes LED running lights and all the wiring harnesses and
splices and switches!
You can use the cheapest reversing ESC ( I used the Traxxas XL-1) and it
will work fine. It has to have reverse as reverse on the propulsion motor is
your only brake. It's only running the propulsion motor and it's a 540
Mabuchi with a pusher prop. I would not recommend faster motors for
propulsion until you get VERY good at "flying" it. The propulsion is so
efficient that even sealed inside the hovercraft the ESC never gets hot even
after six or seven packs in a row.
The lift motor has a switch that is either on or off to provide constant
lift should the propulsion motor or electrics give out over water.
But it does come with floatation foam in case it does have a close encounter
with a big wave.
Mine easily hits the 30mph listed as nominal speed, so it's not a lie. On
hard pack snow or ice I can wind her up to an easy 40mph. For water or
other mildly (cannot be run on tall grass or surfaces that could cause
aloss of air under the seal bag i.e. sand, loose deep snow, gravel, rocks,
rough water) uneven surfaces you can adjust bag pressure by closing and
opening the air intake on the lift motor. I get about 8 minutes run time
off a 2400 NI-CD pack.
So you can have a high performance hovercraft with easily replaceable spares
for only about $250 if you have no electric stuff at all.
I swapped the ESC, and radio from my boat and a 9 dollar Tower Hobbies servo
(faster and stronger servos will not make any difference in how it handles)
so this project cost me about 180 bucks. And anyone with an R/C car could
do the same.
I plan on taking some pics of it in the snow soon and I'll try to remember
to post them.

have a couple of Qs for ya about that model, if you don't mind.
it uses two fans? one for thrust and another for lift?
how does she steer? does the thrust fan swivel? kindda dumb Qs i know but i can't see too clearly from the website pics....
thanks in advance.

Well, it's been about 12 years since it's been operated but yes the engine supplies air to fill the skirt as well as forward thrust. There are carved foam ducts that direct air into the skirt and under the craft. The rest of the air from the prop pushes the craft forward.
It was a real interesting vehicle to learn to drive. When at speed if you kick full rudder the craft turns sideways but keeps going forward in the same direction. It takes a few moments for it to change its direction. So learning to drive it around you ahve to learn to anticipate ahead of time where you will want to go and how soon to start turning. I used to drive it around a baseball diamond and that was pretty cool. Kind of like a huge skidpad. It was quite fast actually. That is a Fox .78 so it make plenty of thrust.
It is a Whiteman Marauder which was a kit avaialble in the early 90's. It is all metal except for the skirt and the foam core. The foam had to be carved to fit and the ducts carved properly. The rest of it was bolted together.
It is sitting in my garage collecting dust. But I plan to restore it someday. It's quite a serious machine. The electric hovercraft on the market today are quite anemic in comparison.

No it is long out of production. I think the company folded in the 90's.
This thread got me interested in looking at hovercraft again! I have just spent the last hour searching the internet and have found lots of enthusiast sites where guys have built some serious r/c hovercraft. And then there are the real hovercraft out there, including what the US military is using. I love this formation flying shot I just came across!

RE: Hovercraft
Folks, I usually fly model planes, but in a magazine I saw a write up on my latest project which seemed fun and when I went for a demo, I just had to buy one. I have attached a picture of the Hovercraft for you, and I have started a new post on Boats General Discussion, under 26cc petrol engine model F2 Hovercraft. Where I will put pix of it's progress as I complete the build. This is the only site I've found that talk about hovercrafts
