Default Looking for ships with oars

What I'm after is ships or boats that have oars but the people that do the rowing are under the deck. I need ideas and plans because I plan on making a working ship/boat that is not over complicated with detail. I have plans for a more life like rowing mechanism but I also want to keep that part out of sight whether it be under the deck or under some sort of cover. Any info or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

The only one that I've seen was a scratch-built Viking ship at the Toledo show many years ago. The builder used a tent that covered up the drive system which I assumed may have been part of scale incliment weather usage to get around hiding everything. Oars on each side were independently controlled for steering.

Love the commercial and thanks for the input on Roman ships. I may have to go that route if I can't find an easier build.

Not many galley type vessels had their oarsmen out of sight - at least some were on the deck, think of the top layer on a bireme or trireme.  There is always one of the Venetian barges "Bucentaur" if I spelt it right, which had the oarsmen below, and the decks clear for the important people to look good and feel important on.  Might be a problem keeping it the right end up, but its a challenge, yes?

Good idea Deathwish I'm thinking maybe the Viking ship can support my idea for linkage. I will look deeper into that maybe just make the boat a bit bigger to put in all the mechanics.
