MJ - SLEEP ????.......10 years in the military - 18 years of running my own business's - 4 kids ....LOL....I'll catch up in the next life.....LOL....my late Dad taught me a valuable lesson from a young age "if you want to get ahead - their are three working days in every mans one working day !..........

Giving Bro Head ........( trying some Aussie Humor.....LOL)


Use a slow set epoxy when bonding the head on so that it can saturate deep into the foam.

Once epoxy has cured its time for 'Make up' ( color) and 'Botox' (epoxy)

Bonding Bro to the Housing Lid !!!............


Take the time to make sure that the Surfer is correctly position and that he is 'well bonded' to the lid......you don't want him coming off in the surf......!!!

Once again - a slow set epoxy will produce a far better bond. Carefully remove the masking tape once the epoxy is tacky !

Got down to Long Beach late this afternoon (needed my fix !),,,,was hoping the howling SE would have dropped off.......no chance.......28 knots and picking up !

I had decided to rather try out the 'single fin' for surfing through the kelp and weed at Long Beach, as the Bi-Fin was getting fowled up quite a bit in previous sessions.
Besides the single fin not picking up as much kelp and weed as the Bi - Fin - I was quite impressed with its overall performance on this board....... couldn't fault it.....felt 'snapy!' and held the face well.

It was a short session (a single pack) The bigger sets were just closing out on the low tide sand banks and I could not see over them. I was also not really into risking breaking my plastic prop on the kelp and having to paddle (chase) after my board, being blown out to sea 'in the freezing cold Atlantic water........."Good decision" remarked Lisa-Marie............I got my Fix anyway !

I was very happy with how the board is managing to surf in the strong wind and mount the bigger white waters........

Some scenery pointers:

The mountain viewed in the back ground, to the left (flat top) is the back side of the famous (now listed as a Wonder of the world) Table Mountain.
The Peak in the center is 'Chapmans Peak'....part of the cycle route for to-morrows world famous 'Cape Argus Cycle race' 100 km's - with over 35,000 entries from all over the world. I have done a few of the racers myself....... awesome event.
The Town across the bay is Houtbay (fishing Industry)............and the Red Bull 'Dungeons' big wave annual surf event, is just to the left of that out from Centinal Peak ( to the very left)
The big Surf peak in the distant background is a well known Tow in Surf spot...SUNSET.... which can deliver some Huge Waves on a good day !

First water test should be 'flat water testing'- it is always a good idea to see that all is working as it should before you take on the surf.......its far easier and safer to realize any problems and can be allot cheaper.............LOL.

I'm very fortunate to live on a beautiful marina......so flat water testing could not be more convenient.

Hi Dominic, I ran 4 batteries through the "Bro" surfer, and as i suspected your surfers are far superior to any modified NQD's out there. I have 2 NQD's and im going to sell them after trying the Bro just once. Ill be recommending your product to all my friends. Thanks again.......

was thinking anyone into rcsurfing wanting to have a go themselves should appreciate your forum from start to finish i certainly did... knowing where to place the bits is the tricky bit but thats how the custom thing works hey

imo anyone wanting to buy a functional surfer with the R + D already done should get a very good deal with a hand built Brosurfer

Thanks BC !.......your sentiment is very encouraging. I always enjoy your participation. Knowing that what I have shared has encouraged you to give it a go yourself, is a great feeling to me.

I do really enjoy sharing the STOKE ! with all........after all.......we all learn from one another.......

As I have often shared - I don't have the capacity to build to many of these boards at any given time, so the idea is to encourage/equip others to give it a go themselves........

I am going to make an effort to publish a far more detailed e-book covering the absolute A-Z...........I reckon that will really make it possible for many more folk to build and own their very own custom ********.


Cant wait to see you get your Custom board wet..........the secret is ...... don't stop, until it is done !

Gotta say that without your input over the last years i would have been happy just watchin the maui crew and modifying what i have

Apart from the very talented individuals out there on the tube and in the forums i'm thinkin you and the maui guys have it sorted with the R + D boards and riders with cool vids to showcase it and with the right attitude to it all im lookin forward to whats coming

Anyway enough of my crap i have lots to do
please dont delete anything i'm gunna need to check back on it when i get to the relevent stages...... but must say one of the best points you ever mentioned was that its easy to add to a hull or pod but quite hard to subtract

Pleasure BC......I have been very encouraged by all the readers. With almost 2000 views already (in one month) I have gathered that this thread is being enjoyed by quite a few folk.

With it being my originated thread, I have the assurance that any 'spoilers' will be dealt with ASAP - so - the info will all be hear to stay and I will continue to add to it......their is just so much finer detail that needs to be shared.... ...their will have to be the e-book sequel.....LOL I want to present a A -Z book that covers 'every little detail.....Winter project.

Imagine empowering a high school youngster to build a Bro ******** as a Project........he/she will learn so much in the process........and have so much fun when it is done.

For those of us 'already enjoying' the fruits of our labor........we hope only to encourage all those who would like to 'enjoy' the stoke with us, in any which way we can.

If it means 'showing' others how we do it, so that they can do it themselves .........or ...........'doing it' for those who don't have the time - inclination or ability.........

I saw that sayin while travelin OZ in the 80's... NT Govt tourism pushed it to get more visitors to the awesome natural things one could see and experience within the untouched Arnhem lands east of Darwin... Crocodile Dundee was filmed in this area and to camp and see 6ft Goana lizards with kites and other birds just doin their thing (mosquitoes are a problem but lol) and the dude next tent gettin a huge fish for breakfast after 5min fishin had me....i'm guessing its not so natural now but...

Anyway i know what your sayin.. my thinkin the reason for us living is to make the world a better place by sharin what what we know with our children or like minded and commend you on your attitude.. 

Then again ******** wise a deep tube awesome cutback or slash off a lip makes the trip much more enjoyable but hey.... lol

Talking about Fishing.........My boys had some fun on Tuesday hooking a few 'leervis' from our Marina.....

With the last board now off to Californ.I.A...........Monday I will start eating my next Elephant........one bite at a time......LOL

Have a great weekend......I'm hoping for some good surf on Saturday afternoon, wind should be down with a 2- 3 ft swell (4-6 ft face)......and that's why we do it !!!!

Cool start to the weekend !......snuck Bro in the car hoping for a quick session between ruining the kids to soccer and youth...........the wind swung around at just the right time and I got a quick 20 minute Stoke session in.........I struggle surfing at these distances......camera on full 12 X zoom

I enjoy slowing parts of the video down....You get to enjoy detail of the moves that much more as well as access the overall performance better.
I was trying out a small 'single fin' I had made in the session - for the kelp infested Long Beach break.......but it seems to slide out a bit and lose hold on the face when running down the line.

What Rudder/Fin is best to use ????/........LOL

Actual 'surfing' has not yet answered that question so lets not even try....they even make surfboards with 5 fin boxes -so that - you can decide - and I reckon its just that....whatever you prefer, what ever works best for your board, is what is best........whatever conditions you surf, may require a different set up.

For myself, I have tried a good few different set ups....I've tried the Tri fin arrangement - tried big/small/straight single fins- tried various sized/shaped Bi-fins........and cant say that their is a 'huge' difference between them, they all turn the board....... Rather.... their are subtle differences that can be felt and that simply boil down to preference.

Obviously, the bigger fin has more drag and even more lift in the tail, when in the turns....whereas the smaller fin has less drag - less lift AND - less turning effect......so I am somewhere 'down the middle in size..........( the Oz's will love that statement)

As for type:......the Bi-Fin still grabs my fancy....it just seems to have that 'edge' over the single fin....it keeps my boards more stable on the wave face....less likely to dig a rail....pulls the nose up/tail down in the turns.....leans/rail to rail......I like it !

Saturdays surfing report :

Had a great 2-3 ft.f 7am session this morning......Lisa-Marie slept in.....well deserved.

Headed down to Long Beach this evening hoping for some 4 -6 ft.f.......Surfers just 'everywhere'.....(collective noun for surfers....CROWDED)......that is the thing to consider if you are strictly into the bigger surf.....you have to share it with surfers.......and somehow they always win.......

SO ! headed down to good old Fishoek.....1-3 ft.f.......a peach of an evening down at the beach........perfect weather....good vibe......a few good little waves.

I reckon finding some action on the small head high face, can be more of a challenge than pulling into the 4ft.f plus stuff..........its all fun.... that's why we love it !

What I like about this video is being able to see the POD doing what it is designed to do....lifting the board, allowing the lean-rail to rail action to happen....creating that authentic 3D Yaw motion I'm always looking for in a rcSurf board.

When it comes down to the size question ......What should the norm be considered/expected ?.......for an rc Surfing wave face.

rcSurfing surely started off being inspired by actual surfers surfing waves and since their inception, ********s have shown that they can do 'that much more' in the surf........like big air jumps, backward/forward flips, rotations....and......and......and.....even ride some huge surf, up to 10 ft face......but !...... what would/should the average wave face size norm be considered....and..... expected.

A good question......:

To consider the question and then to answer it based on a few insights I decided to take a look at what the actual Pro's surf 'on average'.....looking at the all time master Kelly Slater and our very own home grown Jordy Smith's top 10 rides in 2010.

What is interesting to note whilst watching the awesome videos, is that the average 10 best wave's surfed by both riders are for the most a little bit over 'head high' and 'double head high' with the exception of the three big wave surfing spots..........

Scaling that measurement back down to the average rcSufer that stands around one foot high........means a 2 ft face wave would be a double over head wave, matching to scale the average of what is surfed by the Pro's...........so rcsurfing a 4 ft face wave = 24 ft face in reality.........Big wave surfing............LOL

The other 'damming reality' with any surf over the 4ft face size, which I have found all to often in surburbia.........is that when it is happening.......it is simply over CROWDED with amped surfers......leaving you with no/very little opportunity to surf it....unless you have a very secluded spot or own your very own piece of beach. (rare)

So........my answer is.......Practically !......anything between 1-4 ft face is the expected average an ******** will be surfing.......although in truth...given the oppotunity...the size is limitless.

Thanks JIMI.........I do hope that 'you' are doing well with your treatment......how is it all going and when do you go back home.......I'm missing those surf reports and classic surf pictures of yours.....

I had 4 awesome surf sessions this weekend.....cant ask for more....

As for the current Shred'A' 'Shape'.......at the moment I am sticking with it.....Why fix it if it aint broken ?........LOL.......it seems to be working well in most all conditions and on all parts of the wave face...The size I beleive is also the better scale of economics for running gear / batteries - as well as better suited for the average wave sizes expected to be ridden - as discussed above.

As you well know- ******** boards are unlike real boards that are required to carry the weight of the surfer whilst only relying on being powered by the wave itself in different conditions and size............hence needing different shape/buoyancy boards to better serve each variable condition.
Hence the body and tail shape of a real surfboard is about power/speed/ to weight ratio whilst most noses are trimmed in and thinned out for easier 'push unders'

rcSurfboards have consistent power output driving them....so the required buoyancy shape/size can be a constant in all wave conditions.

What I feel I have proven with the Shred'A' shape in most all conditions is that the wider front/nose area, coupled with the healthy nose rocker , really reduces the chance of 'pearling' in the really hollow sections ( 1:11 and 3:22 in previous video), as well as comfortably launching the board over big white waters quite easily.
The tapering down of the shape into the narrower tail area allows the tail to ride 'deeper in' the water whilst leaning more onto the rails in the turns still keeping the prop hooked up.

Overall the board definitely has an authentic 3D surfing ridding style, leaning onto its rails in the turns..........some board shapes/designs steer very flat....point and go type steering...[:-]

I am working on some small 'tweaks' that I will share as I work through the 'set up' section.........

Thanks for this link JIMI..........its really cool to see what folk were doing way back then and also substantiates the consideration that it was perhaps more than one guys great idea....

What it also demonstrates is the importance of board size to wave face ratio........if those wave were just a tiny bit more hollow, that board would pearl so easy..,,,
