Hey all,

I'm pondering building a electric jet drive (needs to be jet drive) type...thing...to haul stuff between boats, tubes, people, etc on the water but the first thing I need is the actual thrust rating of various jet drive motor/prop combos so I can start with the math. However, I can't find anything thrust rating related and I can really only find a couple of small (15mm) drives on ebay or Amazon for sale and those have no technical info. I'm assuming I'm just not looking hard enough for jet drives but I don't know what else to search for for options to buy or thrust ratings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can get a couple on Amazon for cheap, $40ish, but I'd rather at least start throwing money down the correct hole in the water first...

Not to put a damper on your idea but I am sure you are aware of the liability
of operating something on a commercial bases, I assume you are talking about
delivering food and or drinks among people, tuber's & full size boats. I hope you
have researched this in depth as the insurance premium to operate such a
business using any type of model powered boat, be it jet drive or normal propeller
driven is going to be astronomically high, if you could get a company to insure you
at all. And you must be also know that not one of the sanctioning model boat
associations, APBA, NAMBA or IMPBA will let you use their insurance umbrella
to cover a commercial business operation.

Think about it, seriously, the boat hits a child or adult, punches a hole in the side of
a full size boat.........doesn't matter if it is electric, nitro or gas powered the jury in a
court of law will come down on one very hard....$$$$$$$$$$

Final thought, just when you say "Oh no it won't happen to ME" guess what!!!!!!!!!!!

I do get what you're saying and I appreciate the warning but it truly is a toy. As in "Hey Dave, beer me!" and I'll stop playing with my little jet powered barge and ferry a beer or three over to a tube further up or down stream. Or motor it over to a buddy in a dead zone and pull them back into the current (this is what I really need to do the thrust calculations for). No commercial enterprise here. Been there, done that, have the permits, have no interest in more. Can someone sue me anyway? Sure, but they could sue me if I tossed them a beer and it conked them on the head too. I try not to associate with those type of people but if it rolls that way, this is what incorporation, insurance and lawyers on retainer are for.

BTW thrust will be dependent on the power and RPM's of the electric motor used.

Also look at ducted fan motors which are high RPM and can be fitted with water jackets

Hah! Wow, that thing is a beast! While it'd definitely do what I'm pondering, that's going to take a much bigger boat than I was planning on. Just the drive is 10" long!

I'll take a look at ducted fans also though. Thanks for the info.
