RE: RC Surfer
Fishy,
That is real trippy,
Wonder if it is gonna work???
Improve handling In the Surf I mean.
Your boardmight be the first plastic surfer to ever really get in the tube properly and hold the line and come out clean.
How much extra weight have you added?
GOODLUCK!

RE: RC Surfer
Well, it appears to look authentic.
Oddly, we never saw anything here in the States about it. and Chris Barela Used to
surf the Southbay area and was popular in the Mags, So I wonder why it was never Published
or marketed ?
So, I would say Jason Invented the 1st World Marketed Rc Surfer !

thats great info, do you know about the boardshark who made it and how did they get around the pattan, next question is why doesnt kyosho make new ones and up grade like there cars . is there no money in it or is there some other problem ,it would be nice if jason could keep improving his invention, we have come a long way in the rc surfing with brushless and lipo. it would be bummer if we could not keep improving and thensome day the hobby will dieout.

RE: RC Surfer
Maui John,
The Boardshark was made by Planet Toys. They also have a patent. Since the board shark has a moving body with gears and fishing line
a single fin Etc, those differences allowed it to be patented. Jasons Patent Is Particular to his designs ( I would think)
Look at a Rc Car, I'm sure someone holds an original patent, but look at all the models out there.
So by making a few changes in design, Obviously you can get around it.
Kyosho has contacted me some time ago, And There is some discussion interest for new models
but nothing going on lately.
Jason Is Working on a new Model/models.

RE: RC Surfer
guys still havnt tested much due to no surf and now steering servo issues, very frustrating but it will happen. if anyone wants to try just putting extra weight on right side of board for rights and left side for lefts please do it and see how you think it holds on the face and let me know.
what i have managed to get in is positive but has taken a bit more weight than i thought at first, probably about 180grams extra on 1 side.but would probably need less if the keel wasnt as heavy as the balancing effect off the heavy keel works against the offset weight.
will let ya know more when i do

RE: RC Surfer
Dr Curl-Z,
That is great news.
I like the fact that an Aussie invented RC Surfing way back in 1981.
Wow, I have had so much fun withthis hobbyin one year.
Just imagine all the knowledge Jason has accumulated over the last 30 years.
I wish he would write a book about all his experiments and findings.
You know, if you do that then this will happen kinda stuff.
If Clapton is God then Jason is Huey.
Rock on RC Surfers.
MauiJohn,RC Surfing will never die.
Bob sent me a couple of pics from "Pages" yesterday.
I think he first one was taken in the morning and the second was taken late arvo.
Looks like I missed out on some fun little waves again.
Unfortunately, I was up on my roof all afternoon cleaning out the gutters.
Might have to go have a look later on.

RE: RC Surfer
DearDr Curl-ZZZ,
According to the Encyclopedia of Surfing, it appears that Kuta Brown was indeed Packaged and Released in 1991.
After reading in a blog somewhere that Radio Shackhad released an RC Surfer called "Surf Monster" I started searching for more info on that model.
That search led me to findingthis:
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=...page&q&f=false
Check it out!
It says right here on page 219 that Kuta Brown (or Cuda Brown on the vid) was released in 91 and that thePACKAGINGTEXT instructed that if the surf is over 4 foot Cuda does not surf too good but you should be out there surfing anyway, not the toy.
It also goes on to say that Radio Shack also released the "Surf Monster" in 2001.
Anyone know anything about "Surf Monster" ??
The Encyclopedia could be wrong but to quote the packaging text suggests thatChris Barela's modelwas actually marketed after all.
My investigation into the history of various RC Surfing models is continuing.
There is a rumour of yet another model that I am now looking into.

RE: RC Surfer
DR Curl-zzz,
I read your website article "RC Surfer History" today.
I see that Jason started RC Surfing of some kind in 1981 and started his company in 1995 and sold the licence to Kyosho in 2000.
If it is true that Kuta Brown was released in 1991 complete with packaging and instructions, (even on a very small scale)
then Chris Barela's models were actually being marketed 4 years before Jason's company was formed and 9 years before Kyosho released RC Surfer.
That means, Chris not only has the earliest KNOWNvideo of a self righting radio controlled surfboard with rider, which he was clearly intending on marketing.
But he also is the first known attempt at marketing the concept. (Even if it failed to get mass produced and he made them all by himself in his back shed.)
Obviously the Kyosho is a far superior model and has made an incredible impact globally compared to Kuta but...............
Just giving Credit where Credit is Due.

For all those who are interested in a bit more RC Surfer History.
Here's some stuff I found out about Radio Shack's "Surf Monster".
It is 21" long x 6" wide self righting and originally cost $49.99
The guys wetsuit is removable.

This thing looks a bit like that creepy yellow thing that someone posted a few months ago.

RE: RC Surfer
Yeah Crew,
Here is the other one.
Cananzi found one of these on Ebay a while back.
The "Surfer King"
Is this just a repackaging of the "Surf Monster" or something else again?
Either way I don't think we can take either of them too seriously, but like the Kelly Slater Model they are a small part of the overall RC Surfer history story.
Are there any others???

RE: RC Surfer
Jimi,
I checked out the Encyclopedia of Surfing, your right very interesting. A surfing buddy of mine gave me a Surf Monster to fix, I took it apart and well its way under powered and made for a pool only. It has the small 280 motor in it and a all in one servo. I was thinking of putting in a brushless but he did not want to spend anything. It has a 2 piece hull and the battery sits in a compartment under the deck lid. I put in a AM radio I had and new servo and ESC, nothing is water cooled. It has more of a boat hull. It kinda looks cool but no performance.

RE: RC Surfer
Lots of good investigation From jimi.
I wonder when the Kelly Slater Model Hit The Market. The box states " 6 Time World Champion" so
that would make it around 1998 or later.
Interesting How all the models we know today started around 1998 - 2000
The only one still in production as of today is the NQD.

Yeah, your little toy is just a copy of my brothers invention. Too bad he didnt patent it. Chris Barela invented this in 86. I must say your vid is hot. Look up barelafish and you will find the original idea................................
Then I searched a bit on CB and found the vid.
So unless someone else did it before 86 then it looks like Chris was the probably the first RC Surfer on the planet.
I very much doubt Jason ever saw or even heard of Chris's models but he might have.
Sea ya.
