RE: RC Surfer
Hi Brice......thanks for that info........quite interesting.....seems like France has a healthy rc Surfer community......I have chatted to a few guys.
$700.....for the first board......probably no batteries or radio....'It would have been great to see what was inside the board and possibly some 'action' footage.....dont know if I would purchase a board simply on the pictures offered.
Created a Movie Title insert for - Bro' rc Surfer film promotion........initially did not think that folk would 'pay the price' for a 'custom made board' - but - some are.

RE: RC Surfer
Hi Brice......that is a neat looking Jet Ski set up......what is the actual size.........do you have any 'wave action' video
Two batteries are a good option...........2 x 4s 3000mA's paralleled has great run time potential......@ 45 minutes your jet ski is only drawing an average of 8 Amps only needing avg. 120 Watts to drive it.......that very efficient
My boards average around 15-20 Amps - 200 Watts in the surf.
I have run two batteries Paralleled in 3 of my boards........works well. Space & weight position placement is the battle in the rc boards layout........
It was quite interesting seeing some of the other prices I saw on e-bay with regards to various rc surfing components. A second hand Dude (needing to be repaired) was going for $116 ..........how much would a new one cost ?......or are they no longer available ?

RE: RC Surfer
Surf down for the next couple days...just can not get excited by 1-2 ft
I have been having an issue with my twin fins...they were blowing off the posts after big jumps gone bad.
Here we are tearing it up and all of the sudden I have no steering! That will not do.
I decide to go old school and make them out of Brass.
That worked wonders. The board is very responsive and no more blowing off after jumps!
I realized that last week I had made the fins 1 3/4 in and wanted to make them 1 1/2...so today, i made some more and took these photos for you of the process.
First you have to choose the fins you want...I rely on the 'Masters' for all my designs when it come to the Divas...nothing but the best!
I particularly like these Twin Fins:
Then I needed Brass from our local Hobby Store:
3/16 Brass rod and 049 Brass plate
Then it was off to Kinkos (our local copy center) to get the fin template down to the correct size:
Here they are glued onto the brass plate...
My trusty Dremel Tool made it quick work to get them roughly cut out.
Thank goodness for Harbor Freight and their cheap tools...this belt sander make sanding them to shape a breeze!
Next it was time to cut the slot in the rods to accept the brass fins:
My dremel Drill press does the trick and makes the job pretty easy.
I then Super Glue the brass plate in place onto the rod
Thats it!....
just kidding
The secret to soldering the Brass is FLUX! use lots of it!
The flux allows the solder to flow in between the brass rod and plate...making for a bomber weld.
The next part of the process was difficult to photograph... it involved a torch and the use of both of my hands....so words will have to do...
The trick is to get the brass just hot enough to melt the solder...and not much hotter. So with a propane torch I apply a little heat...the flux is bubbling and spreading out....apply a little more touching the solder to the brass every so often as I go, trying to find out when it is just hot enough....
Eventually the solder starts to flow....apply a thin bead around the rod...allowing it to wick underneath...after it cools some, flip, and do the same to the other side. It will take less heat to do the second side...
Allow it to cool down and all thats left it some cleanup, washing off the remaining flux, sanding down any extra solder, and a little polish to make them pretty, you can even use magic markers if you want to color them....
Here are my 1 1/2 inch FCS Mr 78 Twin fins:

RE: RC Surfer
Hi Kite.....
When I place the shaft in the wood core of the fin I put a flat on either side of the shaft and bond it with a 'slow cure' epoxy. The flat prevents it from 'rotating' which generally would be the reason for it coming adrift. The wood core also needs to be a hard wood ply.
The Brass Fins are a certainly a 'stronger' solution.
What is the length of the antenna on the Airtronics RX ?
Bro'
Looking at this picture made me realise how times have changed - not only the board design.........imagine showing them a SL8TR - every one was quite happy 'sharing the wave' and look how great the average dude looks - trimmed and ripped..............no fast food in those days..........convenience could just be a curse.

RE: RC Surfer
Hugh preparing 3 of the Airtronics 92744 receivers for their "potting epoxy" sealing.
Hope they seal as good as the first 3 receivers I waterproofed earlier this year.
I am using the plexi boxes that the receivers came in as molds.

RE: RC Surfer
High Hugh.........that is a sure 'safe' water proofing solution......
The RX definitely needs to be water proofed...its either take the precautionary measures or be prepared to swim sometime later....
My precaution:
Once I have my steering servo and ESC leads plugged into my RX - I wrap the RX completely in a ball of 'Prestick' (tik tak ) then place it into a balloon ,tied with a rubber band at the end where the leads and antenna protrude.
What I like about this option is that it is easy & quick - I can mold the shape of the Prestick water proofing layer so that the RX will fit into the sometimes limited/odd space I have for it. It reduces the vibration/resonance,which can damage the RX components over time..

RE: RC Surfer
Hey Dom (or anyone else out there):
what exactly is "Prestick" or "tik tak" - as you call it?
Does it ever harden?
Is is what we had as kids; called "plastercene or funny putty?

RE: RC Surfer
Reinforcement and stratification dude (i call that french momiefication )
legs, head and arms are molded polyurethane foam with an aluminum rod which dépase 3 cm that allows the assembly of the dude and strengthened.
Molding takes time and there is loss, but the result is simpa.
adjust and paste the cyano has fast hands and legs to the body (possible connection rod reinforcement
if need to take joint sealant polyurethane adhesive which can be painted.
material:
- 50 to 70 g of epoxy resin or polyester
- Carbon fiber fabric between 150 and 300 grams per m²
- Glass fiber lightweight caftât best
- 2 to 3 ml glass braid 2 to 2.5 cm wide end weight 1mm (the best)
- Stretch wrap (cut 2 rolls of 2 cm and 5 cm)
Impregnating the carbon with one resin on a board covered with platisque
2 carbon position on dude
3 impregnate the glass braid with resin on board
4 it is here that the "momiefication" begins: surround members with the braid with a small overlap.
5 To finish impecable and avoid sanding do the same with the food stretch film strip for compressing the fiber and the resin as possible.
6 for the head fiber reinforcement at the 2-cheek and the rear of the head.
Last step finishing and painting
At 180-220 sanding abrasive has a water for imperfections and the paint adheres.
If you are interrested contact me by email.

RE: RC Surfer
Aloha Dom,
Ok now I know what you mean - yes we do have the same sticker type putty here in USA - I will be sure to seal my batteries with it. - THANKS
Your rc surfing gets better with each video - that board of yours rips - I know how stoked you are with it.
Maui still flatter than I can ever remember - I am sure looking forward to the BIG winter surf that should be here November.

RE: RC Surfer
Hi Hugh......it works well.... I use it to seal everything. What do you call it in the US...........I am working on a Web Site and would like to use the correct 'term' to explain it.
I 'am' really enjoying this board....it works well in most conditions......just need to sharpen up on my 'timing'.......I cant work out if it is 'me' or an occasional delay/glitch in the TX signal........I still have not tried the TX with 12v battery power ......I am sure it will improve the output signal strength ( wattage output) and speed things up.
I have stepped the prop up from 27mm to 30mm and still running very cool - will now try a 32mm prop for even more 'Kick'........it is running good run times.....avg. 20 minutes - drawing 4500 mA's.......out of a 5800 mAh pack.
I do hope you get some great swell soon.........I'm missing the Maui Action Footage and Classic photos............
Have a great weekend.
Chow Bra'.....(SA slang for Cheers)
Bro'
Having fun with editing - a small slide show capturing the moment from the previous footage at Muizenberg (Berg)..............

RE: RC Surfer
G'day Crew,
Sure has been a while, great to see the stoke still cranking an gaining momentum!!!
Awsome builds going on left right and centre....i miss this
As for ol m8 he's still keen, he got a couple of sessions in......2-3ft faces of onshore slop first time round, got a couple of fun 1's an survived YEEW, Second session he went bigger n clean, around 3-4, 1 st pack, heaps of fun, a few good rides/decent airs/ being cautious/getting a feel, all good.
Second pack, absolutly crackin (getting cocky), a few absolute smokers (well to me at any rate) an plenty of not so good ones along with a couple of decent/heavy wipe outs, then he kind of just lost oomph, still having fun at this point tho.
Then no response, mmm middle of winter, no wetty no board an not real keen on a swim and a fair way out to boot (going for sets)...not good..sort of half came back to life, managed to get him in..a big thanks to Huey for not making me swim, pulled ol mate out and drained about 1/2 litre of water....came home, stripped it and drowned everything in inox, all the electronics still good, .
I snapped a blade of the prop hench lack of oomph, second time they've failed me (plastic props, no more) .
So basically ol m8's waiting for a new ride. The weather is starting to get better here so he should be getting a 1 some time soonish (fingers Crossed)
Keep the stoke alive YEEW

Hey MJ..............surfed some 2 - 4 ft face yesterday afternoon, 1st day of 'SPRING' (Fall for you guys)
Some faces were closing out just to fast. I was running a plastic 30mm.....which was a tad to slow......the blades flex.....tried a 32mm plastic prop kindly sent from JIMI but blew the blades off.....
Thanks for the link....I reckon a well shaped - metal 32mm will be an added bonus to performance.......add that extra acceleration and speed when needed.
