your set up looks unreal lipo brushless your going to have huge run times and blazing speed. the weight i would tape lead on it and test in bath tub, it would begood if it was sheet lead but fishing sinkers will work you can hit lhem with a hammer to make flat . the more wieght the better upto a point . jimi rainer and seb knowhow much wieght to put inthey rip on these boards. john

Iadded something like 120-130g of lead -epoxiedunder the keel .
That helps with self rightening but not against being torqued at full throttle.
The only remendy against that is ... not giving full throttle ;-)

@Jimi: I will post the complete weight and some pics ... if I don't forget it once more... ;-)

Thanks guys for the weight advice. Have the Great Planes stick on 1/4 increments weights in strips and will flatten a bit with a hammer and stick on. Will do some testing but no surf here in Ark. Going to Seaside, OR next month and will surf it there. Will flare the lead in with some bondo or something. So I need to add probably about 4 ounces. It uprights ok now but a bit sluggish on the right side and no waves knocking it over in the lake.

Hi Guys,

Been super busy with work and building boards at nights, so haven´t been able to say much lately.

Jimi, awesome pics! I love the photo of the massive air! Must be time for some video footage!

Enrique, good to see you have made your board and that you are fitting it out with good equipment. Are you going to use 2 or 3 cell lipos? If you are using 3 cell, it is going to fly!

Stringfly, I have about 200g of lead in the keel area inside the hull. I am running 3 cell 5000 lipos (about 440g batteries) and while they give me huge run times, they need to be counter weighted with extra lead in the base of the board. If you don´t want to stick the lead under the board, separate the hull and put in inside the board, that is what I have done and siliconed the hull together for a proper hull seal.

John, How are you? I have built a third board and will be testing this weekend. My first and second boards were ok but not perfect and honestly too heavy. My third board is 35 inches and only 2.3kg, a fraction over 5 pounds with battery. I scaled the board exactly to the NQD lisa surfer´s board. I am also making a lighter figure, My first figure now weighs almost 400g as it has so much resin and cloth on it. I have fitted foot pegs top the board, so I can compromise on surfer strength as the figure will be able to move in a wipeout and the o´rings will break first.

Well sounds like you all have been having fun at the beach, I went very early this morning withLisaand the surf reporter for the local news asked to film it and it was on at the end oftonight'slocal news. Lisa has been in the newspaper, online news articles and now TV. If only I was selling them, the PR would be great! I think I´ll charge a dollar for every person that asks where to buy these and I´ll make my first million that way.

Ciao guys,
Seb.

Hi Seb,
I know what you mean about people coming to you at the beach.
I don't mind it, but its hard to focas on surfing when being asked continous questions.
Guess that is how it goes. We have also made the local news here, people love it.
Sounds like you've been busy making boards, us too. The amount of lead weight is always
an issue. So many factors including the power to weight ratio to consider. Almost trial an error method.
We have had good waves lately and are starting a new video. It's always tough to pick the right clips out
of the thousands we have, but when it's new video time ya gota do it.
Don't forget to send John and I some pictures of your progress.
Long run times Seb..........Jock & John [link=http://www.maui********.com/index.html]Maui RC Surfer[/link]

Dudes,
"Greenough" has been pretty good all week.
Here's a bit more colour for this blog.
I think that big board would be perfect for where I run my little rocket.
I WANT ONE!!!

Hey Guys,
I have just ordered 2 x "Muchmore LiPo Cell Balancers" for my HPI AC/DC Patrick chargers.
The Patricks are made by Muchmore and will dock with the balancers.
John, (Maui) Yes, I AM ROASTING these Nimh packs and will only be using them a little bit longer while I get sorted for the conversion to LiPo.
So, 3 cells you say?
OK, i'm on it.
Seb, can you please give me a bit of advice?
Do the 3 cells that you are using fit straight into the standard NQD or will I need to modify the battery compartment?
I don't really want to mess with it too much if I can avoid it.
What about the 2 cell ones?
What brands of batteries should I use?
Can I still use the Deans connectors I have on my ESC?
Please Help, I don't know anything about LiPo, YET!!!
I am very anxious to get this sorted ASAP.
I ain't gettin' left in the dark ages.

OK Crew,
I found these:
Tenergy 7.4v 5200mAh 25C with Deans.
These should fit into the stock NQD, the Tenergy 7.2v 5000mAh packs that I am currently cooking are 136mm x 47.5mm x 24.5mm and they just squeeze in.

•Maximum continuous discharge: 130 Amps
•Maximum burst of 156 Amps for 5 seconds is ok for every 30 seconds
•Recommended charging rate: 5.2 Amps
•Discharge (Output) Leads: 12 AWG silicon wire, 105mm long.
•Charging (Balancing) Lead: JST/Align/E-Flite style connector. 22AWG PVC wire, 40mm Long.
•Dimension: 133mm x 41mm x 24mm
•Weight: 289g / 10.2oz

But....
Will I need to change ESC?
I have a 60A Seaking.

Are these gonna be a suitable starting point?
Anyone?

Well now I am really confused.
I have been checking out LiPo's all morning.
What C rate do I need for my surfer?
Does anyone know of a good High Capacity 3S 11.1v that fits the NQD without needing to alter the board?
What a jungle.

Rainer,
Sometimes.......
But there's a 4-5 foot swell on and it is offshore again.
I better go down to one of my favourite little reefs and cook a few more Nimh packs.
Should be pretty good but the wind is strong, but only half as strong as it has been over the last 3 days.
31/2 hours till work.
Better hurry.

Great surf again today.
Water jacket port sprung a leak on the 12th battery.
Looked like a swimming pool inside.
Left it in the shed and went to work.
Got home and nothing worked, ESC had water in it.
Sprayed RP7 through the ESC.
Motor just turned but sounded like it had gravel for bearings.
Sprayed RP7 through ESC several more times.
Reprogrammed perfectly.
Business as usual.
Offshore again in the morning.
Gotta rebuild this thing tonight.
Sea Ya Crew.

Hi Crew,
Just finished filler coat on "Carbon Reinforced Dude.
Ready for sanding.
What a freak out doing this stuff is.
Must be the messiest CF Job ever done on an RC Surfer Dude.
Not quite as well done as the one Spencer showed us on "Radio Waves".
But I am sure he is a lot stronger than a standard Dude.
Can't wait to paint him Fluro Orange.

I ran 8 packs today then the southerly came in and messed it up.
Got some good waves and some vicious wipeouts.
Dude made it home in one piece.

Aarghhh - Jimi, you're hitting a weak point!! :-(
I live approx.150 miles away from the open sea (Aachen ===>150 miles===> North Sea) and winter isapproaching too quickly in Europe ;-(
Blonde Lisa is the only one who's ever surfed real waves (vacation in Spain, Mediterranean Sea - see my posting dd. 16. Aug. '10)
From her first test runs on the localduck-pond I'm sure Black Lisa will outperform "Blondy" by far, but she didn't get her chance, yet.
Anyway, I'll sure keep you informed as soon as she had her "first time"! ;-)
Take care!
Rainer
