RE: RC Surfer
Seb,
I use a Sony HDR-SR12 video camera.
It records in AVCHD 1080i HD.
My problem is that I can upload perfect
raw HD video but the viewer needs very high
speed internet conection to view it. So, I'm
always looking for a format that will work for
lower speed conections. I'm also looking for a good
format for our website video. I'm tired of going through
YouTube. I have a few videos on the website now
that I uploaded directly to the website that work well.
I have Road Runner Turbo so it downloads fast for me but I
don't know about others that visit the site.
I really enjoyed your video. Very steady for the camera
being strapped to your head. Pretty unreal.....Keep it up!
Happy Holidays, jock

RE: RC Surfer
Jock,
If you are after quality, then just upload raw footage and it will be crisp. However, viewers will be waiting for the video to buffer so they can view it if it is a large file. If you post short clips (under 30 seconds usually of an unreal maneuver) then go raw footage, but if you are posting something longer, then convert it to the highest quality MP4 file you can do, then upload that. A 3 minute clip will be about 50mb which can be handled by any internet speed (except dial up...) If you post 3 minutes of raw footage then viewers will have to download a 700mb file which will be a hassle and it will play for 3 seconds and stop while the download buffers and catches up.
Don't convert it to WMV or MOV, quality will not be as good and a MOV file will be just as large. Stick with MP4 and you'll be fine.
While you want to put the video onto your website, going through YouTube is a good idea for a couple of reasons. More people will be able to view it, you can link it to the forum or your website for us to see directly and the file will be converted to MP4 automatically for you buy YouTube. Just upload raw footage and the quality will be still very good. As long as you do not zoom in digitally (who ever is filming shoots in nice and close with the optical zoom) it will still be high quality.
The only real problem I see with YouTube is being able to attach music. I have been caught a few times with copyrighted music and have had to choose a crappy song from their audio list.
Can't wait to see some more footage from you guys, as seriously everything else that goes up is usually some dude who just bought one and is using it unmodified or has modified it and is playing with it in a lake...
Ciao for now and Merry Christmas,
Seb.

RE: RC Surfer
Jimi,
How is your fin set up going?
I made another fin with a wing at a less downwards thrust angle and it surfs really well. It hold onto the wave well and carves the wave nicely. However, when I try to get it slotted, it doesn't hold on to the wave face as tight as the other fin which has a much greater downwards thrust angle.
With my original fin, even when it is in the barrel and is surfing almost horizontally (they never get barreled standing up right at 90 degrees) it still hold onto the wave amazingly well until the wave shuts down.
Guess I'll just change fins depending on conditions.
We have had some good surf days here lately, about damn time! Whats the surf like in WA?
Seb.

RE: RC Surfer
Seb,
I have not been surfing lately.
I have not tested my 3 fin Lisa yet.
And I have not made any other fins yet.
There could have been a few small waves at Mahomets over the last few days as the swell has been small and the wind has been very light early.
All my favourite breaks have not been happening for a while for one reason or another, some are winter spots, some have been too small, others have been too straight, others have been blown out when they have had swell.
To be honest I am enjoying a break as I have been going hard at it all winter and spring.
I am just working on my boards.
Last week I fitted 4 boards with aluminium water ports.
This week I have just finished restoring one Dude and 3 others have a bit of CF on now and need a sanding painting and resin coat.
I also have an NQD board that I have hardened the tail on and need to sand and paint that.
Quite a few parts in the mail at the moment so while I wait I am chipping away at the sanding and painting so when the gear arrives I should have all 4 boards with CF Dudes up and running at the same time.
I also have 4 new batteries that need the wires shortened by about 50mm and some Deans plugs soldered and the 3 others also need the same, the wires are so thick and long and are a pain to fit in the boards and I don't want them putting upward pressure on the deck.
Bob has a guy that works for him who is gonna do 'em for me, 'cause you know, I will burn the house down.
I have a couple of ESC's coming and they will need Deans and bullet soldered too so I will just get them all done at the same time.
So with a bit of luck, I will have a good quiver up and running early in the new year.
Then I will probably start work on the original Kyosho RC Surfer that I bought from Brendon.
Your videos are great and your gear takes a real pounding too.
Do you ever get to surf any other waves?
Those rides you get are so short and closeout at the end but that does work for those awesome airs you are doing.
Most of the places I surf around here are longer peeling type waves and I get to ride to the end and flick out.
Sorry no video but you can see what I mean from my pics.
Anyway, I got a lotta work to do and Bob is keen to start collecting footage for his movie (Electric Dude Land - Jimi Findrix)
so I better keep chippin' away.
Sea ya.

RE: RC Surfer
Dudes,
Swell has arrived.
Shories, Point Moore, St Georges and Stockfence are finally breaking.
But the wind is howling southerly.
Check a few spots early again in the morning.
Think I will take the Gathcam.
More swell on the way.
Pages may even be breaking by Sat.
Just about finished restoring 3rd Dude.
One to go.
New NQD is just about ready to paint the rails pink.
Sea ya.

RE: RC Surfer
My friend and I made an rc parachutist with a miniture eliptical parachute, a couple of servos and a teddy bear filled with rocks and dropped it from a 1000ft with my old plane and it worked amazingly well and it steered itself perfectly back to the runway.
Anything is possible!!

There hasn't even been a decent RC-windsurfer, sofar and kitesurfing isway more complex to control from the RC point of view.
A crate of beer is sure a fair price for seeing an RC kitesurfer in action! ;-)

RE: RC Surfer
Hey Crew,
If anyone can invent an RC kiteboarder and make it work I could sell a container load.
I reckon Seb could probably build one.
With the wind we get here the little Kite Dude would be jumping 50 feet in the air.
Rainer,
I saw this on the news a couple of times the other day.
Some guys in Germany were River Surfing,
These guys were surfing a standing wave like pros.
Roundhouse cutbacks, 360's, the works.
Even at night.
Looks like awesome fun.
Take off's were really cool, just jump straight onto the board from the bank and start shredding.
Do you know the place where they do this?
Have you ever seen them doing it?
Take your RC Surfer there and send it out.
No sharks there!!!
Sea ya.

RE: RC Surfer
Happy New Year everyone!
Jimi, the river you are talking about is in the south of Germany just north of the Austrian Border near Isar. I've see the footage, it's very cool! There are a lot of rivers that offer this, just a lot are not very accessible like this one.
I'd much rather charge a wave bore for a few kilometers!
Check these out. My favorite is the second one which would be amazing for RC Surfing!.
