I have been thinkin' 'bout your 4mm rudder shaft / tube set up for your homestyle fins.
Your idea of use cut down propshaft and tube is very good and you said fhey fit well so I am ivery nterested in this.
What are you using for a tiller arm and how are you attaching it?
Are you using the stock one somehow?
I did find these on line and although they are obviously a bit long I guess they could be cut down to size and might work well.

Hi Jimi,
The rudder steering arm I am using is off an old airplane steering arm. The one you are looking at on eBay should be fine. Just remove the grub and file down a 3mm screw and that way you can use a pair of pliers to tighten it up.
Remember to file the side of the rudder strut so the screw sits against a flat area on the rudder strut, see pic.
I used a 4mm tube and pushed it in the rudder slot and marked where I needed to cut it. Now you will need to find a bullet plug and cut the end of it off and slide it on the rudder strut so it fills the end of the propshaft tube that is cut. Once you cut it, you will see that the uncut end is 4mm and the cut end is 5mm, the little ring of brass from the bullet plug seems to fit perfectly over the rudder strut and nicely into the propshaft tube. This will give it a good seal and you can fill the tube with grease.
To make the fit, get the 4mm propshaft and file down 2 sides of the threaded end, cut a fin out of plastic (I bought a plasters tool to smoothen out plaster, 2 bucks from bunnings) and cut the slot for the rudder strut to go into and used super strength shelleys epoxy to set it in place. Make sure the rudder strut is set further to the front of the rudder than the centre or it will have to much force on it to push the rudder back to center after a turn.
Then fiberglassed it in with laminating resin and cloth then painted then filler coated it. It is the same as the fin for my larger home-made surfer and is just as strong, just a little smaller.
Once the tube is in place (a little superglue will keep it firmly in place and side in the rudder and into the steering arm and mark where to cut it. Once you are happy with the rudder and tube, file down the rudder strut where the screw will tighten against the rudder strut. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE SERVO CENTERED AND GET AN EVEN LEFT AND RIGHT TURN BEFORE YOU MARK WHERE TO FILE DOWN A SPOT ON THE RUDDER STRUT.
Try it out with out a horizontal wing inserted, it might be perfect for you. If you do want to fit in wings, just get a hacksaw blade, snap a 2-3cm piece, heat it up and push it through the rudder. Make sure it is at a slight downwards angle.
Hope this has been helpful.

Have not even been gettin' any waves lately.
We had a look this morning and there were waves but it was too windy to bother.
"Point Moore" is the most westerly part of the town and the wave is on the northern side so offshore there is SE.
It is very exposed and the wind comes across the bay on the southside and hit the waves as they wrap around the shallow sandbank.
The beach is flat for about 50m out and so there are no dunes or anything behind you as you face the wave, just ocean (behind you).
It is a fickle set up.
Not enough swell for some of the sheltered reefs on the north side that I was hittin' in winter and the beachies on the south side are straight and rediculously boring at the moment.
So I have just been working on the boards trying out a few more ideas attempting to keep out water.

The board has had a hard life.... good n the bad.... wasnt worth the hassels trying to fix a leaky turd... Ended up taking the running gear out of Surf curls munched xt.... i will be sticking it all into the board im shaping here...

speaking of bad times and good.well it was bad times for me this arvo. the engine mount snapped clean whilst on my first pack!! the leapard motor is a bit of a beast lol. was getting huge airs with it but i think its too much power .

Is there any vibration in your motor? I use 3000-3800kv motors and have never busted up a mount since being on the flexishaft. Solid couplers killed a few! They are easy enough to make, just a hassle to have to repair something. You are using the flexishafts right?
I was down Burleigh today, waves were small but still managed to rip it up. Where do you usually RC Surf? I will be down Dbah tomorrow morning early fighting for a wave with 500 other desperadoes.

Surf off Miami (Gold Coast) was perfect for RC Surfing this morning, 1ft with 20-30 meter rides left and rights. However, after one battery the rain kicked in for the day. Managed to get almost 3 minutes of good footage from one battery session, will post on YouTube when it has uploaded. I am so used to posting vids with 3 second rides ending with an air, nice to finally get some face riding time.
Each video I upload is about 500mb and takes about 6 hours to upload. If I upload a 100mb file, the quality is bad, so if you upload a video to YouTube, upload the highest quality file you possibly can so it will be the best possible quality.
At least I got a few waves today : )

I dont go to any particular spotbecausei just throw it in the car and have a go after i go for a wave. Went to fingal this morning (dreamtime beach) it was so glassy and perfect bout 1.5ft it was the first time i really got to have a good go on some decent waves with the rc.

He looks ok in the pic.
Have you done anything to strengthen the Skulldude or is he standard.
I have 4 old Dudes with fixed ankles / legs / arms / heads and I have sanded the repairs ready for CF job.
I have been putting it off for ages because it is such a fiddly messy job to do.
But now I have been getting a few other hulls ready to go I have to do the Dudes too.
Wind was howlin' again this mornin' so I did not bother lookin'.
Did get an email from Bob, he reckons there were some good 1' to 2' rights where he lives @ "Mahomets".
Mightget a run at dawn tomorrow if the wind mellows out a bit.

Jimi skull got two k9 tattoo's.... he is surf harderd..no standard skull... ive modded him to handle the bigger surf with fibre glass rovings... Dremeled deep channels following the mold seams on his body and filled with mixture of tuffness its like giving him double bones.. plus he's got a covering of resin to save the wetsuit paint job he's got to be tuff to surf with the locals here ...ive been thinking of covering him with fibregass cloth once the stick is complete tho there isnt really the need to as he's doing fine.. so far

This footage is from yesterday, the conditions were perfect!! Best waves I've surfed is months!

I upload my videos as AVI files so when YouTube converts and compresses them, they will be of the best possible quality.
My last video (which I honestly think is some of the best RC Surfing footage on YouTube since "radiowaves", home-made surfers excluded of course!) was 780mb. As I film with a camera strapped to my head, I shoot with the zoom a fair way out and have to digitally zoom in to capture, so quality is reduced, so uploading AVI quality is my only option.
You can convert it to an MP4 file (which YouTube will do anyway) and the file will be smaller but the quality will be about 75% of what it will be compared to the same file uploaded as an AVI.
Hope that is helpful.
