Hi Crew,

"Point Moore" was 1 - 2 foot and absolutely perfect this morning.
Servo died after an hour or so, must have copped a lot of water the other day.
Raced home and changed it and went back an hour later but the crowd was all over it.
Families and stuff.
Did get a few fun rides but every time I'd get a nice  set wave and started tearing down the line people kept standing right in the way.
Very frustrating.
The new rudder was working great, very snappy now.

Just cleaned and tub tested, no bubbles.

Sea ya.

Hey Crew,

Here is a little glimpse of todays action.
I swear he raced out onto the face and carved on down the line.
I don't know why Bob didn't get the rest. ???
I think he thought it was all over for that one and got a surprise.

Anyway, he also took a little bit of video footage today, our first go, but I have not seen any of it yet.

What a blast!!!

Sea ya

Seb,
Yeah mate, but it was much more to that ride than that what you see there.
See how well the rudder is working?
Hows the bottom turn???
See what I mean about laying on the rail more in the turns.
Ya should see the snaps he does under the lip now and really nice cutties too.
He also did some great floaters.
Man, the difference with a good rudder is unbelievable.
So much more realistic to watch.
Way easier to operater too.
It will take us a little while but I am sure if we keep at it we can get things up to a competitive standard.

I gotta get the ballast on the bottom now.
I am just gonna watch a little bit of video footage now.
Imagine what your 3S Spaceship could do out there bro.

Sea ya.

Nice!

I see a few people in the water, it's so annoying when you find a nice empty spot and then everyone just decide to go out there! I am starting to not give a crap if I hit someone. If they drop in, I am not getting off the wave anymore! (unless they are 6'10")

Revolution baby... REVOLUTION!

Now edit that footage and post it : )

Alright Then All You Micro Shredders,

With the overwhelming success of my new NQDrudder bearing mod,
I started making another one of those little ripper fin assemblies this evening..
So easy to put together once you have done one.
Only this time I did not use an oldbroken one, I just cut that pathetic Martian plastic shaft straight off.

Also, 2 new 40mm long brass water ports with grommets, and a new 1.6mm pushrod.

What great fun all this is!!!
Looks like great waves again in the morning, WITHOUT THE WEEKEND CROWD.

well, i set my motor ablaze yesterday...hull took on water, she layed down and the entire inside got wet before we could ger her out....motor still turns, esc is waterproof so no biggy there....also, it was a 19t motor, and the wires coming off are fried, so it seems that maybe the wires werent rated for that much current going through them....but at least I finally can stop playing and customize the board (already started yays)....

Question:  the receiver wire got a little charred, and I am looking at pragrammable receivers, so will any kind of programmable receiver work?  My trasnmitter is a "Spektrum 2.4GHZ DX2.0"...also says "DSM racing system" (if that matters.).  I'm not totally sure the receiver isnt salvageable, just assuming it is, but I also think having an extra one on hand wouldnt hurt.

anyway, any input would help.

Oh yea, suggestions for a good motor/esc setup?  Looking to replace all that as well

Surfergirl,
Do you have a pic of what happened to your board?
These thingsleaklike sivs.
Before you put anything into your boardyou will need to do a ton of work to the hull and deck to try to stop water getting in.
John, is sending you some neo sealing strips.
that is a start but there is much more to do than just that.
The sides of the hull need to be sealed and I mean sealed, right along the seams.
There are many ways to try and do this.
Also take out the on off switch and seal the hole.
Seal around the top of the little rudder shaft hole inside the circular rudder compartment., this is a bad leak into the hull.
Get sme SS bolt for your deck.
Make sure your antenna is sealed really well.
The footpegs bolts will leak too if you don't seal them one way or another.

I do all these things and still have water getting in.
It is a mission.
I am sure you have been reading a lot off ideas on this blog.
Read carefully and try anything you can to keep the water out.
This entire blog is a history of people trying to make these little rockets waterproof and failing.
Only Seb seems to have really done it.
John Curlz says he can too.

It drives me crazy.
Also you will need to change your propshaft and tube and seal around the back end of that too.
It is important to put your recieverin a balloon and tie it off to waterproofit because water will get into your board and desatroy it.
I recommend spraying a little CRC or RP7 on all the electrical plugs and motor bearingsand wipe your Tx antenna with that too after every use
and use clear synthetic grease on your deck bolts.
Place cut up sponges around your motor too.
Put silicon in the ends of your ESC and wrap it up all around even in between the wires with electrical tape

If you do these things you can learn to survive by containing the situation until you achieve the ultimate objective of no water intrusion.
When you finally do get it watertight, sooner or later a water hose will come off and fill your board up like a swimming pool, so all these precautionary measures will help to minimize the damage.

I am still having problems with water after nine months of full on building and rebuilding my surfers.
I run them several times a week and for 2 - 4 hours straight and they go flat out from start to finish.
What I do is wipe out any water that does get in after each battery and squeeze any water out of the sponges.
I have a little hole drilled underneath at the nose about 45mm is good (as does Seb) and if water gets into the hull you can open up the hole and drain the board.
Seb uses some kind of waterproof tape to seal it, I ike to fill it with a tiny bit of Knead It putty.

I constantly strip and clean and spray everything, if I didn't I would have stopped running long ago.
I don't really know what anyone else does but as you can see on this blog Iam having some successes with my boards and RC surfing.

That is what I meant when I said there is a long way to go.

As for motors and ESC's etc. I think everyone else will fill you in a bit on that subject.

Good luck.

JIMI

Surfergirl,
I forgot to mention that there are many other people on this blog who claim to completely seal the NQD plastic boards and to some degree this may be so.
But very few of them run 6 to 13 packs a day 5 or 6 days a week like I do
I usually find my board will stay reasonably dry inside for a few packs but after about 5 or 6 things start to get radical.
I just manage to contain the problem as best I can.
The other thing is it is very time consuming cleaning and rebuilding all the time but for me it is essential because I run the thing so darn hard and so often.
I ran 13 packs today and stripped and cleaned my board this afternoon.
It is now almost 3:00am and I will be hitting the beaches by 5:30am.
My 13th pack is just about to finish charging now. lol.
The surf is gonna be even better this morning. Alright!!!
I better go and get a little sleep.

Sea ya.

i'm going to have to print all that lol.....most things we had put sealant on; however, we  had yet to take it completely apart (I really just wanted to play with her).  Now she is in pieces, the hull taken apart, waiting patiently on the seals from surfcurls.com, and now its getting a new paint job.

I jsut uploaded the pix to my computer, they will be on here shortly

thanks!!!

The problem is that neoprene is not 100% waterproof . Once it soaks for a while in water ,it will get threw the neoprene. so the more packs you run it willeventuallystart to weep threw. Also if you screw your lid down to tight it just flexes the lid and makes it less watertight. I think that the biggest downfall with these surfers is not enough ,and not evenly spread deck bolts and i hope that woombarra correct it with there new model or i doubt i will be continuing with rc surfing.

Cananzi,
I am pretty sure that the things you said are correct and I am starting to think that for long sessions I might need to take 2 surfers and run for a max of 6 packs each.
Curlzy has already told me to take 2 but not specifically for that reason.
That is why I have started making another rudder assembly.
But even if that works out better there is also twice as much cleaning and maintenance and REPAIRS to contend with.
The neo soaking through is the reason I am experimenting with wiping the seal with clear grease.
My theory is that this will further waterproof the seals and stop them gradually soaking through.
Early indications are that Icould on the right track.
There are also so many other reasons that water can get into a board and sometimes it is a real challenge just trying to find where it got in in the first place.

As for you continuing , I hope that you do stick with it, maybe if all else fails you can sell your gear and use the money to order a board from Maui crew.
I am sure they don't have any where near the hassles with this as us plastic RC surfers do.
Plus you will be able to send a Dude out in far bigger surf and also actually get the thing tubed properly which is virtually impossible with the smaller boards.

I am spewing, I didn't wake up until 7:00am, (Burnt out) and as I am on holidays I have to be home by 8:30am to look after my 8 year old son Joseph when his mother goes to work.
I should be on my 8th pack by now.
The wind is very light SE and the tide is low and "Point Moore" would be absolutely crankin right now but I have missed my window of opportunity.
I am trying to get Joseph (He just woke up) to come with me but he wants to go to the skatepark, I will try to make a deal with him but I think it will just be more hassle than it's worth. Lol.

Yes I hope "Wombarra" have worked a few things into the new model that will help us all to surf better and stay more dry.

Seb,
On this matter of neo waterlogging over longer session I want to hear what you think as you are the most experienced hardcore regular user of the NQD on in the whole histrory of the UNIVERSE.
How long do you usually run for a session?
2 hours, 3, more???
Have you found that if you go beyond a certain point things start to turn ugly (especially with the seals soaking through)?

Surfergirl,
Go for it girl.
It's a blast.
I got your email and I will get the doll off to you pretty soon.
Be sure to tub test often to check for bubble indicating leak points.

Extreme Maui Crew
Are you willing to make me a board and how much will it cost me?
Seriously!!!
I absolutely love all your work and I just can't see myself building the hull for myself. lol.

Sea ya crew.

Surfs Up,
Alright, I have just arranged to take Joseph and his mate from 2 doors up the street down to "Point Moore" for an hour (or 2) and then to the skatepark on the way home.
I hope the wind holds out 'cause all indications are for some seriously shreddable little waves.
I will let you all know what happens later.

Bummer about not waking up early, I get a little pissed at myself when I know the surf will be perfect and I can't wake my ass up in time to hit the beach and be back by 8am.

The grease on the neoprene will not do much. The grease on an o'ring simply allows the rubber to slide against the plastic and metal without buckling, the neoprene is just being pushed downwards so grease is unnecessary.

You run 13 packs, unless you are using a flexishaft, you would probably need to re-grease the shaft after 6 with a solid coupler. Even using a flexishaft I re-grease after every 2-3 sessions and I run only 4 packs a session (mine are 11.1v 5000mah though)

Is your board still leaking?? If so, are you using rubber or neoprene as a seal for the footpegs under the deck lid? I tried neoprene and it leaked so I stuck with rubber which hasn't let me down.

Seb

Hi Seb,
I had a fun little  session down at "Point Moore for an hour and a half.
The wind had swung south by the time I got there but was only very light.
The water was smooth and glassy but the waves were a bit wobbly due to the wind direction.
As often happens there, the weed moved in and out of the shorie but for the most part was not a problem.
I did get plenty of  fun waves but the wobbly thing made it a little bouncy at times.
Nothing spectacular but pretty cool to have hardly any wind.
The board stayed dry for the first 4 packs.
On the fifth one I had to squeeze a very small amount of wata out of the sponges and by the end of the sixth pack they were quite wet again.
Not too bad because my damage control methods managed to contain the situation.
It was not dirty water like you get when it comes up the tube.
The radio area and battery area were dry.
Luckily, the water was contained around the motor and seemed to be coming from the cooling tunnel or its ports.
It is an old one and has the ports epoxied back in and a bit of epoxy on the barrel where it had rubbed against a lead ballast under the motor that was too thick.
I have some brand new ones so I think I will change that and see how it goes.
The hull had some water in it too and I am pretty sure that is coming from the rudder hole which does need attention.
I just drained that at the nose.
The rudder is holding up great and staying smooth and aligned perfectly.
All in all, not too bad today, but still needs attention here and there.

At least it is still nice and clean and not looking hammered.
I am always happy if I can at least contain the situation, you know!!!

Sea ya.

hey guys about time i said hi ive had my nqd surfer and been reading this since about when jimi started so feel like i know you all sorta. thanks for all the mod tips etc they have helped massively. im currently in the starting phase of complete rebuild now. i think i got enough knowledge now to make lisa rip reliably.wont be pullin the hull apart unfortuneatly as last time i did i epoxied it back together and think it will be next to impossible without destroying her. ive been running her with 120 amp turnigy esc 28 size 3900kv motor and 5000mah 2s with the stock drive line and rudder. added weight to keel inside n out, cut down lisa to 10.5 inches(this seems to help heaps)fiberglassed deck lid(helps so much with lid seal, well worth it)glassed in rubber washers from tech screws at same time (no leaks from screws)my only leaks now come in drive shaft or steering shaft as im pretty lazy with the lube but the sponges catch this tiny amount. i use hot glue on the foot peg screws inside to seal them it pulls of pretty easy if need to get at them i rarely break o rings so thats fine i use the sink ones from bunnings on the wing nut mod with shrink tube. rebuild will inlude flexshaft 36 size motor and gonna do that wing fin you guys been raving about and go 2.4 ghz. might go 3 cell but will depend on motor, i dont really want to mod batt tray but who knows. so thanks again for all the help. its probly somewhere back on some page but can someone recomend what whole flex shaft setup from 5mm motor shaft through to the prop nut works and where to get it. thanks again. happy surfin.

I have seen some Surfers use a thin coat of silicone
over the neoprene deck seal To stop The sponge like water intrusion
over multi pack runs. I have a few old school kyoshos with neoprene / silicone smear
and those dont leak at all.

Just a thought...

G'day ItsfishI,
Sounds like your having a lot of fun.
Once you finish rebuilding maybe you can find someone to film your sessions too.
Then you can join in the upcoming comp series too.
Sorry mate but where is Shellharbour?
Do you have any pics/vids of the waves you operate in???

Seb,
At the moment my footpeg bolts are siliconed over.
It's a hassle when it comes to changing o-rings I know, but I just wanted to eliminate that as a suspect.
Luckily I have not broken an o-ring for ages so it is not too much hassle.

Once I have got everything else right I will try your rubber idea.
I am not exactly sure what you are using but you have got my attention on that one too.
Is it adhesive or just plain old rubber?
How thick?
I have very large bolts compared to you so I am uncertain if it will work as well for me as it does for you.

Gotta go.
