But Ed,

get rid of the Tamiya plug on your ESC. That is not suited for higher Amps. Replace them by 4mm gold-plugs (at least that is what I use).

The esc looks like a Aqua Craft 45 amp for NiCad and most likely is with the Tamiya Plug, and the motor also looks like a Aqua Craft about 1750 KV they have a 5mm shaft and 36mm Diameter

dan im with canazi dont think its your motor, its weird. maybe you could email steve at offshore and see what he thinks or post in the fast electric forum those guys will know something for sure. for some reason and i dont really think there is one i keep thinking maybe esc. maybe a dumb question but is your batt getting a full charge? good luck with it 00 these things can be ultra frustrating.

no surfing this morning found cracks in lisa around top of her legs from her butt to her #@$%. too many times over the falls/closeout barrelled and just plain hammered i reckon, maybe get her sorted for the arvo.

edf why dont you try ed himself at rcsurfrider. to try it out start out with small prop give it a short run and check if its getting hot or not then work up. dont see why you couldnt use lipo its just a battery. if you ran 7.2 nimh then 7.4 lipo should be sweet.

So if my ESC is an Aquacraft 45 amp which it very much resembles with tamiya plugs can I only use Nicads? or should i solder
on some deans and try to run a lipo, I cannot get a hold of Aquacraft to find info on this ESC thanks.

Ed, it is wise to only use NiCd or Nimh with your setup.
If you were to run lipo with that ESC, you would probably drain the lipo too much before you would notice that the lipo is getting empty.
By then it is too late and you have damaged your lipo.
You can charge it again, but it will not hold as much mAh as before. And probablyt hte pack wil start to swell (sign of mis-used lipo).

To be safe just Nicd or Nimh.
But then the next question comes: how old are the NiCd packs you want to use?
And how long has it been since they have been used?
If the packs hve been retired for a couple of years, I am afraid they will not work so good anymore.

You could try to cycle them several times (charge - discharge).
But even then it will remain doubtfull if they can deliver the Amps wanted in full action.

Before we go any further please share with the details of your Nicd pack(s).

- number of cells
- mAh
- age / last time used

Then we can give you proper and direct advise.

Hi Ed,

a good, affordable and proven-in-use starter set is:

LiPo (2 cells, 5000mAh):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14320
or
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14377

ESC (Seaking or Turnigy, 60A)

Watercooled brushless motor:

You will sure find these products at Ebay-USA and HobbyKing-USA, too.

Take care!
Rainer

My 28ers work fine in both of my surfers - power enough - by far ;-)
However, you need a new motor mounting angle for 28-motors.

What is the advantage of 36-motors?

Thanks for the info everyone getting closer to starting work. Yes you are right, Iknow lipo's pretty well and I will probably just run a nicad for now, intill I can find out more info on the esc thanks.
right now no Nicads only around 20 lipos, that is all that Iuse in my planes at the moment, but for boats can you get longer run times with Nicad or Nimh? my next set up I purchase for lisa will be from
hobbyking full brushless, lipos, 2.4ghz

rainer not saying a 28 motor wont do the job they can but in my experience it got really hot and was overworked a 36 motor can handle more amps bigger props etc without prob. gives more options and more power which i really like. i think you will find most modded brushless boards are using 36 motor.
i started with 28 then went to 36 so i recomend start with 36. saves $ down the line, wont want to go bigger than 36 but good chance wanting to upgrade to 36 leaving obsolete water jacket motor mount motor etc.

Jetliner,

I would get the Turnigy Marine 60A Brushless Boat ESC and 3660SL 3060kv Brushless Inrunner (WaterCooled) and 2 or 3 Turnigy 4000mAh 2S 40C Lipo Pack (USA Warehouse).
I have this set up and it works fantastic.
I work in Torrance CA and can show you the set up if you want.

Jet the batts are from the USA wharehouse but the moter and ESC are from China. I took it out the other day to run the new batts but Lisa's foot came apart and I had to end the session short so I dont have a run time on the batts yet maybe this weekend. I could bring it into work tomorrow Thursday and/or Friday and meet you some where. If you look back at the posts you can see my set up, pages 98, 99, 101.

Default RE: RC Surfer

john rpm is worked out by multiplying the kv of the motor by the voltage of your battery so for your setup

1900kv x 14.8v =28120rpm

remember also on a full charge 4s you will be starting with 16.8v (31920rpm)then going down to whatever your cutoff is say 3.4v/cell is 13.6v (25840rpm)
thats a difference 6080rpm over your run which is quite noticable compared to rpm drop on 2s setup.

imho that sort of rpm is perfect, of course ive only ever had a nqd and maybe your boards would handle more.

also i would cram the biggest batt that would fit or even better 2 smaller ones in parrallel to make one bigger batt

if i got any of this stuff wrong please someone correct me

good luck with the board john it looks awesome

later

John Maui,
That new board looks so sick.
I love it.

You sure are keeping busy with the shaping.

Hope it surfs really well.
