RE: RC Surfer
Bearcave- Definitely use Grease!! You can cut the bushings in half 1/2" is plenty long on each end but if it is a long shaft I would support in the middle. A syringe works good to get the grease in the tube.
Dom - I make custom Rc Boards !!! That is what you are seeing on the videos. I have used the Boardshark guys on them cause it was easier than making my own dude. So you don't know what KV stands for either ? We need Tripper to come thru and get us edumakated.

Do you have much problems with the boardsharks dude snapping ?
I wonder how hard it would be to make a custom guy that turns his body like the boardsharks guy. I think It enhances the realisim and looks sick.

Sorry Karl !...............some one once posted after seeing one of your video's that "that was the most modified 'BoardShark" so I assumed it was.
I would love to see some 'detailed photos' of your custom board.
As for what the kv 'abbreviation' stands for -Its simply a 'unit indicator' for the potential number of revolutions per volt. ..............I would guess something like "kinetic velocity"..........LOL

Yo - Thanks for clueing me up on what kv is not. My brain has to know what everthing means.
The guy on a boardsharks will usually go for a while before falling apart.I've had 5 of um.The best thing is to add some reenforcing around his ancles with fiberglasscloth and epoxy glue. I was attracted to the realism of that figure from the get go and have made him work. It actually inhances the turns not just the look. I have a new radio that I made that is a 3 axissingle stick and a trigger. Maui Johncan drive my guybetter than Ican right now.I'mworkingon making a figure, but it is a tough job.

RE: RC Surfer
Ok, Since were talking fins...I have just completed my first Twin Fin...photos will come soon...
But my dilemma was when I was installing the tube that they go in...
Do I make them perpendicular to the deck? Which I did...
Or, do I make them perpendicular to my 15deg Vee bottom? they would look nicer...
I was just driving home from the model boat pond...when I had this thought....would the outside fin actually lift the outer rail...and drive the inner rail deeper into the water, initiating a carved turn..like in skiing...edge set rebound.... causing a more 3d effect???
Some sort of modified Rudder Dom...Rudder Tom?
Any thoughts? Might just have to try it...have some room for an extra set of holes

RE: RC Surfer
Hi Karl.........I dont think my 'guess is that far from the 'mark'..........
I reckon this article should 'ease the brain'.......as I said - kv is simply the unit indicator. http://www.flyelectric.com/ans.kv.html
extracts from the article.
KV as we use it refers to the rpm constant of a motor - it is the number of revolutions per minute that the motor will turn when 1V (one Volt) is applied with no load attached to the motor. In summary, we call it revs per volt - but do not think you will obtain those revs when you attach a propeller; obviously the revs will be reduced because of the load.
What does the KV tell us? Well it is related to the power out from a motor, or more usefully the torque level of a motor. It is determined by the number of winds on the armature (or turns as we sometimes call it) and the strength of the magnets - you see, there are so many variables with electric motors. So KV allows us to get a handle on the torque we can expect from a particular motor.

RE: RC Surfer
KH thanks for the grease input.... i was useing grease but went to oil for the ease of cleaning out and re-oiling...
Some guys i know run boats and use oil for the free running benefits but then again they are always on it anddon't sit out the back waiting between sets with water leaking up their shaft... My biggest prob is that my boardsmay get lots of runs one week then nothing for a month..Ihave to work on getting them out there more regularly.
I dont need the ultimate performance so i will check out the grease scene again... Three bearing system sounds good.... syringe pumping the grease idea way cool....
YPC I've often wondered why the ducks on your test pond never seem to fussed in your vids.... any time i do a test run at my local boat rampourfeathered friendstake off pretty quick lol..... reckon you may have run a fewrc boatsinthis pond and tippin the 2nd generation of ducksmay just say to each other"no worries bro's its just Dom doin another test".... lol

RE: RC Surfer
Hit the beach at lunch time today - swell 4ft - bumpy - close out sections - not great for rc surfing.............anyway.......ran three battery packs !
Was very happy with the boards overall performance in the conditions. Very stable - rights easily- lands flat - rides the face well - the BI-Fin definitel works better on the wave.
I was even more impressed with the HK $14 radio ( with the new longer antenna - still only in the housing)
I must have surfed at least 300 ft out - in some serious close outs and 'did not' lose a bind once...........I'm still amazed.
No leaks at all......I only ran each battery for 10 minutes 'as they are new' - used 2500 mA's = Average draw of 15 Amps = Avg. 166.5 Watts = Avg. 250 mA's /miute = 20 minute run times using a 5800 mAh pack (85%) - batteries will get better as they run in.
The video footage was terrible - my camera just could not 'focus' on the ocean - it is all 'blurred'. I am going to try another camera to-morrow........hold thumbs.
Kite - fitted a splash guard which I saw in one of your boards a while back to trap the grease and any water spray............worked well........no mess.
Have a good Friday All!

Cape Town has some insane photog hiding behind the lighthouse with a camera in Dom's storm photos.
I would love to throw my rc Sheila into a wave as thick as those shown breaking over the harbor jetty.
Is that Simonstown?
Good to hear your #5 build passed all tests with good marks.
Maui still has no waves..............

RE: RC Surfer
Hey Hugh........its the small fishing harbor - Kalk Bay harbor, nestled in False Bay, close to Muizenberg.........you may have had a view beers at the 'Brass Bell' directly opposite it- years back when you were over here........its a very famous little village......very picturess.......with tons of art - antique - coffee shops and various pubs & restraunts.........very laid back.
I dont know about 'throwing Sheila into one of those waves...........that is unless you dont want to see her again........those waves are 'seriously powerful'.....they have often smashed the fishing trawlers on the opposite side of the wall.....
'Kalk Bay Reef'.......is also another world famous surf spot.......not for the faint haerted - when it is PUMPING........very hollow Left Break.

When I saw this pic it reminded me of your recent contest photo......

Hoping to capture some great waves and footage to-morrow......................

RE: RC Surfer
2.4 GHz - Some info for the 2.4ghz users. I was working with a friend yesterday who is a computer engineer and knows a bit about radiowaves. He told me that the 2.4GHz is an unrestricted band width and is full of users from cell phones to garage door openers for starts. Then it is a sub- frequency of the microwave frequency ( 2.4 and microwaves are on even divisions 1/2, 1/4 etc.) Microwave ovens use radio frequencys to heat up the water molecules in food to make it get hot or cook. So 2.4GHz is more easily obsorbed in water than other frequencies.
Lastly a lot of coding is used to keep out interferience now a days like Spectrum radios. So when the board comes up from a wipeout it takes time to reconnect to the code of the Tx not just find a transmition. Hope I remembered all this right !!!
Thanks YPC I want to change my middle name to Vincent so I can be Kv H ,,,Nah I like KWH ( kila watt hour) Better stay with my Dads humor.
Aloha, Karl

Another good bit of advise for 2.4 gig is the TX antenna direction when we are surfing..............I set mine at a 45 degree angle toward the water............if it is pointed up......it heads into the sky.
Read this article and watch the video.............

This is an informative read regarding 2.4ghz. The bloke who wrote it is an EE and does all the testing of Radio systems for approval by the MAAA in Australia.

.................................................. ....
While you guys are workin out the real stuff regardeing KV lies technical secrets fins hulls tails and everything else important... i thought imight add something simple but good...
Splash Gaurds are Awesome... not only for the spinning stuff that flys everywhere but also the fact your batts and leads may be caught up in those spinning things.,,
Electrical Conduit is good stuff.... easily cut with a hacksaw blade and can be formed to any shape with some heat... in these pics there are manymechanical bad things happening with this hull but if you disregard those thingsand focus just on the gaurd and how you could customise it to suit your needs you will see its very simple and needs no support, the battery leads hold it down....
KISS.. Keep It Simple Stupid... works for me but rarely pretty... lol

Tripper - Thanks for the link to the forum on 2.4GHz RF. Learned a bunch to help get better reception.
Kite- I want to seewhat you doon yourtwinfin tilt ? On a fixed fin board the more you lean the twinfinsover the more the boardlifts in the tail, but rocks back and forth easier. More vertical is more drive but harder to roll the board. Alot like "V " inthe bottom. More" V" = easier turn , less drive. Only the lift is reversed. In the bottom more"V" = less lift. Keeping the fins Prependicular to the "V" could be the best.
Bear- Nicelittle cover piece !!! Hopefully you with a good Stuffing tube as talked about you won't get water in that far !!

Bearcave...........neat.......sturdy solution....
Had a GREAT Saturday surf session.........2nd outing with board #5 - was awesome !.......nice 2 - 4ft swell face..........not perfect...........but great fun.
Struggling with good video footage. I was about 250 ft out..........got a few great photos by Lisa- Marie.......quality is down.......but tells a good story.....
Very Stoked with this board...........ran absolutely well..........no leaks at all !........great punch !........responsive handling !.........good run times - 20m

RE: RC Surfer
Dom - great to see your newest board is working so well.
I am now building 2 "identical boards" that will use same surfer girl figure - only diff will be the bottom decks:
one will have bulb keel like most other rc surfers
one will have Vee bottom with no keel
- finally I hope to be able to compare the bottom configs
Picture are the shapes before laminating with epoxy (eps core).
I just laid up both bottom decks today - top decks tomorrow.
This build I will only be using fiberglass & epoxy - no carbon - to see if radio signal range is better.
Will keep you posted...............................

Hi Hugh.....thanks for the rating....the photos are no Hugh or Bob pics........but I am happy to see them....
I am trying to edit some video footage........struggling with the package.
As for the V / Pod boards........?
I have been comparing my footage between the V and the Pod............there are certainly Pro and Cons.
Looking forward to your findings.

Got It !.................................. finally sorted the footage editing issue out.
Although this was the second outing with this board, this session is really the first decent session......things get a bit better as I get into the boards ride.......Timing is every thing with a rc surfer.........got to work on it.........not as easy as turning around a race buoy.......LOL
I'm STOKED !

one X one is going to be our 'boards' brand ...........meaning they are' built one at a time' "custom" and it is the only 'one of one' "unique and original"
