RE: RC Surfer
Hi BC....the shape is certainly unusual - BUT - their is some good / beneficial logic in it.
The thought behind the full scale surfing TOMO board is to have a much 'shorter' board (lighter with less drag- wind- leverage effect) with the same effective rail turning potential.
The actual rail line is what is most interesting to me. This board could well be a 900mm plus (36") length board, if the tail and nose were extended to complete its traditional looking symmetrical lines. Effectively, what we have with this design - is a 'shorter board - yet- with the same effective rail length, as what a longer board offers.

RE: RC Surfer
G'day Crew,
Have been busy and i think Ol M8's finally ready for some real world testing, have done a quick flat water test and a 10min sesh in horrible choppy, sloppy on shore washing machine conditions (couldn't resist), went ok and was fun. A couple of minor issues, which have hopefully been sorted. I found i was loosing bind from time to time (with the antenna being in the engine bay( now external)) , split a water line and had trouble seeing Ol M8 in the white water (no paint just glass n foam (white amongst white)), I gave Ol M8 a quick squirt with a pressure pack just for some colour. I'll paint both Ol M8 and the board once i've got it all sorted (have had to make a few mods already which would've screwed any paint work) i think i have now got it all sorted. I went to take some happy snaps but the camera is flat (on charge now). Here's a couple of progress shots that were already on the computer, i'll get some more recent shots and hopefully a couple actionys up later :-)
The fin, engine bay lay out an Ol m8 getting ready for his new ride
Cheers Nigel
Oh kind of side note...have just been looking at old posts
Tripper, sorry M8 gave you the wrong date for my Bday bash, is tonite 19th not 16th sorry, 16th was last mnths gig

RE: RC Surfer
Hugh,
WOW!!
Is carbon fiber hard to work with? You make it look easy. What kind of resin/epoxy do you use with carbon fiber? This looks like the perfect material to use for bulletproofing the surfer. MJ told me your surfers are super tough. Nice job!
I have been testing all week, working out the bugs that come with a new build. I was lucky to catch State Park with no surfers on the main peak. The waves were wind blown, but big and surfable! The 48" model handled the tough conditions better than I expected. I could see the model with no problem. The run time with the Octura 447 was even better than the Gruapner 52mm. 50 min. without hitting the cutoff. The run time is UNREAL!! Big Hollow Waves Bring It On!!!
RC RESINATOR
Working on the video! stay tuned!!

RE: RC Surfer
G'day Guys, Got to run 2 batts, the other day, Yeew finally after what seems like forever. Was so much fun, the first batt out at "Middleton" (family friendly/beginers beach) but found by the time he got to where the waves were i could hardly see him (spent most of the time in 6" waves giving my mates dog something to chase). Second batt out at "Railys", much better, the beach is steep with sandhills to stand on breaking over reef. Had a ball got a few fun ones with a couple of big airs just because.....he can...lol
About 3ft face 4-5 on the sets? Med/strong cross shore winds. (should have paddled out myself)
I think Ol Mate was crapping himself there a fair bit when the sets came through and cought on the inside, wow i felt a real kook just trying to get out the back lol, was getting the hang of it towards the end tho
All in all i'm rather impressed, the main issues are getting blown over (backflipping) when charging down the line and the dreaded hop under power, i'm only using about half throttle or he just wants to jump out the water.
So more lead going on and have to make a new way of keeping the batt secure as i ripped the velcro strap out...todays jobs
A few more prog shots and 1 Jeff sent me, not the greatest shot taken on phone
Cheers Nigel

Howzit Hugh !
Thanks for the 'rating'....much appreciated coming from 'you' (excuse the punn.....LOL)
It was a great wave to try the float'er board out on...not many surfers around either......the board felt very responsive.....I reckon I will have heaps of fun with this one.
Cant believe Maui is still flat....!....something has to happen sooooon !

RE: RC Surfer
MJ and all my friends.......
InDaTube Version 1.9 is a great success........ Just Ripping.
I did have a session where he went pretty much dead in the water......?
Lucky for me he drifted in without any damage.
Why was he dead in the water......... Sea Weed wrapped around the prop....... looked like a KFC drumstick!!!!
I had to cut it off with a knife, No damage.......
I surfed all day long at a spot we will just call "Mark's Place" in perfect conditions.
No other surfers in the water for a half mile in either direction
Glassy / Sunny / Warm
Waves were 3+ feet faces with some larger sets.
Workable Corners or Down the Line chargers
Mark, Steve and Mike all say hi and look forward to your next visit.
I am attaching a few photos showing the Rustic Setting and conditions of this Secret Spot.

RE: RC Surfer
Resinator - really looking forward to the world's largest rc surfer in some bigger waves. Looks like it does all great in small ones.
Larry - what a perfect spot to live & rc surf. What happens when there are large waves at high tide. Does the house float?
Hugh's new swallow build update:
- finally completed epoxying all the deck hardware, water cooling tubes, servo mounts, fin tubes.
- Kimo got some back surgery and had his receiver embedded for higher antenna position
- I decided to use Kimo on this new build, so I can take my time with new figure at a later date.

Hugh,
With large waves and high tide........ it gets pretty exciting, but nothing major happens. This place has been here for more than 50 years.

MJ - Curves are good !..great build Kite !...its the length of the 'effective portion of the curve' I find, that makes the difference.

RE: RC Surfer
Thanks MJ,
I added more lead to the keel and it seems to have sorted out the issues, i think it was just to light in general, it now weighs in just under 2.8kg or about 6lb for our non metric friends.
That picture must be a bit decieving, i'd say about half of that but cheers...
Had a quick 5 min session today, minimal bounce on the flat water and holds into the face well (no blow over), wow full noise is pretty darn quick, yeeew, was lovin it then Ol Mate decided he'd rather be swimming than surfing :-(....so seaing as everything seems to be working as it should it's time to strip it all out, pretty it up and add some colour...
Cheers Nigel
