almost ready to rock darkseacret.. let the fun begin

YPC.. last vid I had to laugh at you kissing your board.. oops i mean blowin the sand out of the cooling pipes lol... as a sand groveller i often do the tube clearing not kissing thing too

Anyway the funny bit is that when i had the old 27mhz radio and basic electronics they used to glitch randomly regularly, and once when i was clearin my tubes it had a glich... and the prop nearly cut my nose off.... lol

all good enthusiasts just had to share the nose thing...

Default Throttle Rate / LVC

Something worth Sharing !

Been testing the LVC ( low voltage cut - off) in respect to various throttle dual rate settings...

Simply and perhaps obviously - although maybe not considered / over looked - the more sensitive you have your throttle response set ( throttle dual rate) the 'sooner' the LVC will kick in.

Reason: the sudden/ fast /quick power surge draws the battery voltage down more aggressively - easily below the LVC setting - causing the LVC to kick in....low power....even if there are still a good few Amps to be had..

When you soften the throttle - less of a surge / voltage draw - LVC limit not exceeded -- more use of the over all battery Amp capacity.. allowing 'more run time'.

Very interesting topic..... Dual Rate Adjustment
My understanding is that the Adjusting the Dual Rate only effects the setting existing in the End Point Setting of either Steering or Throttle.
I have been told to keep the Dual Rate at %100 and make the detailed settings via the End Point Setting feature.
For instance, I set my Throttle via EPA as a curve to control the throttle setting very finely. When letting a beginner drive one of our RC Surfers, we often turn the EPA for the throttle down to %50
because often, new drivers use full throttle like crazy the first few times they have a go at the waves.

Howzit Indatube .....as you say ...on a programmable radio the dual rate feature allows you to customize the throttle response / feel - and - the EPA sets your end point.... I would soften the throttle response using the Dual rate setting - some even offer an exponential curve setting.....so you can have it soft over the first 1/3 and then more aggressive as it climbs.....120 on the DR will give you the widest range of throttle between your set End Points (EPA).....100 is the stock setting.

Since my programable Turnigy suffered fatal death from severe salt air corrosion - I'm now using the very durable / basic HK 2 Pistol Grip - which only has one analogue throttle trim / adjustment - acting much like a dual rate setting and EPA all ion one - that is - when setting up the ESC via the radio- the MAX throttle point is set up when the throttle is held in, all the way....With the throttle trim knob turned right down - anti clock- one has a very slow /soft throttle response - as you dial it in - the throttle response becomes more responsive / aggressive. (shortens the throttle throw to flat out)

Depending on the surf conditions - I err more toward an initial soft throttle feel....I have consistently found, that when the throttle response is set on the aggressive side ( which ever way it is set up) the ESC;s LVC has a tendency to kick in that much sooner, compared to when the throttles initial response is set up softer. Must simply have to do with the 'draw down in the voltage spike on acceleration'..... an aggressive throttle setting derives a higher voltage draw down spike.... compared to a softer throttle setting.

Another reason I have come to like the HK2.... is the raw simplicity of changing the throttle set up - if I want it to be aggressive on a wave to pull a few Rodeo's or Tail Snaps - I simply reach for the throttle trim knob and dial it in - on the fly - I found with my programmable Turnigy radio and boating JR stick radio - I had to scroll through the menu to change the throttle DR settings - only the steering allowed an either or % quick selection.

Thanks YPC,
Great description of the whole concept....
Kind of an advanced way of fine tuning our models for personal use and setup tips for maximizing runtime and battery life.
Isn't "Tinkering" with this stuff great!!!!!!

Indatube !..another cause of big voltage drain spikes is 'Cold weather/water'....in the Summer I run my LVC on 3.2 v's and in the Winter I run the LVC on 3 v's. A cold battery experiences a bigger voltage spike draw down, than a warm battery. In winter, when set on 3.2v's I would often have a LVC kick in just on launching the surfer.... Some rc plane pilots experience a LVC cut out , on the runway, whilst attempting take off when the weather is cold...they even have specially designed neoprene battery covers and warmers for the batteries..

I run the LVC on the lower side...as long as the battery cells at rest (after a run) are not below 3.6v's..and the battery is able to be handled (not hot)......all is good ...!

Yep !....love tinkering - figuring it all out -

YPC,
My MT-4 transmitter w/RX-462 receiver has telemetry that returns the main battery voltage for Cell #1 of the Nano-Tech 6S LiPo battery that I use in my model. I also monitor the temperature of the motor.
It's very interesting to watch, in real time, the effect of throttle use on the battery voltage. For sure, the more you use the "Juice", the quicker the battery voltage drains. Also interesting is watching the battery voltage recover a little while I sit in the lineup waiting for a set. As the battery gets near 3.7v, which is the point at which I bring my model in, the telemetry shows the cell value fluctuating around much more that when the battery is near full. My runtimes are pretty good at 40 minutes+ under normal conditions and up to as much as 60 minutes when the waves are inconsistent. As for water temp, our water temp here in SC is almost always in the 60's. My motor temp shows between 70F/85F under normal surfing conditions. There have been several times where the temp has shot up to 120F..... yup, the cooling lines do get clogged with sand or seaweed sometimes. I just bring him in, blow out the lines and chuck him back into the lineup.... heat in the compartment is not a good thing.
What has been the effect of your settings tinkering on runtimes?

Indatube !...you have all the bells and whistles there.... great info to have !...could have great fun playing with all that info.....drive myself - and others crazy !

Your run times are amazing - big voltage - low kv = long run times......

I run 3s & 4s set ups - 5000 / 5800 mAh - 3650 / 2450 kv motor - 120A esc - 27 & 30 mm props - run times between 15 - 20 minutes .....as you know... I am more of a flat out power surfer...... all over the show ......not a patient authentic surfer....

What are your running hardware combo specs ? - I have been asked to build a 36' board and need to start doing some hardware purchases....to set it all out...

Hey ! ...its Movie night with the Mrs ....got to dash ....

Thumbs up

YPC....
Here are the spec's for the components used in the InDaTube II build:
6S NanoTech LiPo-5000 mAh-25-50C discharge / 120amp ESC w/dual water inlets / Leopard 3674 / 1400kv / Airtronics Digital High Speed Servo / Airtronics MT-4 with RX-462 Telemetry receiver.
Running gear is a .150 Flex Cable with 3/16 prop shaft, full length brass stuffing tube, replaceable brass bearing and a teflon liner. I use two different props, depending on the size of the waves. Both are CNC Aluminum 3/16" shaft, sized at 38mm and 40mm. I do have a 42mm prop that could be used to "Tow-In" MJ and Resinator when the Big Wednesday South Swell comes to the Meat Grinder here in San Clemente!!!!!!

Hi Hugh,
I'm fascinated by your build quality, innovation and attention to detail !!
It's like we are working with "Mud & Straw" compared to your skills !!
Sure are looking forward to a visit from you and having you in the lineup with us.

ITS ALIVE !!!! Got a chance to run her yesterday and she boogies . Id say top speed about 25-30 mph handles great but with some poripousin at flat out . Big problem tho. The acylic silicon i had used to seal hulls had still not cured and was useless . Had a bunch of water in compartment . Ive dried everything out and split hull again and broke the expoxy putty free of flex drive housjng. Sob. I beleave im gonna use 5 min epoxy for the deck seal or should i use a better silicon?

rc Kiteboarding.....lol

Stopped off at Table View ( Blouberg) for a quickie - on route up the West Coast - wasted a few Amps - conditions were better for some Kite-boarding air renditions - rather than to much surfing .....
...very impressed with how the board actually stayed 'on the water' battling the very windy conditions.....for most of the time...

SUP Bro righting test

Been wondering if the SUP Bro would self right efficiently, having the added weight of the paddle as well as the now sightly wider board.
Still needing to add a few finishes - wanted to get it tested soonest- to set my mind at ease...

Weighing in at 2.3 kg's ( 5 lbs) RTS - it PASSED the Jacuzzi test...

Howzit DS - good to 'sea' that you have it altogether ..looks great !..surf is calling !..I would recommend you look at sealing the ESC and battery ends with 'blue tac' and tape...don't know much about corosionX...but cant say I have seen it being the #1 solution to water intrusion. Water in the battery will corrode the terminals over time and water in the ESC will kill it in a short spate of time. Even though a number of manufacturers state that the ESC is water proof....it is NOT !

Prevention is better than cure !....sealing the electronics is like 'buckling up'

YPC- Your dude was made to SUP, the paddle fits like a glove!! lol That's great!!

We had a few hot days in town here and the lake is half cleared of ice so I could do a couple flat water test runs ,.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCGSsNDSjxA My dude is going the opposite of the rudder,
any ideas??

Still lots a snow here though too.,
I got to test the new GoPro, here is the first vid.
