The difference is a car with a clutch can be started without the car moving.

A clutchless car is LOCKED into a foward or reverse gear. Hit the starter and the starter motor has to move the car fast enough to start the engine.

Model airplanes are clutchless.

for performance wise clutchless set-up has advantage over with clutch, less wt, less moving parts, clutch doesn't really help boosting speed..clutch is good for bigger/heavier boat when starting the engine like u can start the engine even the boat is in the water no need to put in the rack and start it and throw to water, in short more convinient. ,,,for art sake....

i don't see any direct relation of clutch to the engine life, i believed engine life rely on how it is being use and maintain.....my 2cents..

As far as in a boat. Less parts spinning means less vibration and more speed. Clutches can vibrate under load.
You will never know standing on the ground.

No clutch means faster engine acceleration at all speeds.

All I know is WITH a clutch you now have the option of stopping your forward momentum . To me thats a PLUS.

I just run up on top of a boat driven by a much smaller guy. To stop.

a clutch like in all motors just stops the engine from turning the shaft (or well stops it from moving)

Quite simple:

Are you after pure speed?
Do you boat alone?
Playboater?

Most racers don't because they want to get the last bit of performance from their boats.

Boating alone with a clutch means you can drop it in the water and not worry about the boat taking off.

As a play boater with my mono, I like a clutch. It makes my time a little more enjoyable. Playboating with a clutch doesn't mean your boat will not run fast, just that little bit that could get you around the course a tad faster is all you'll be missing.

Personally, I have boats with & without. Just depends on which one I want to enjoy at the time.

You know, if you enjoy building the boat then you'll realize that its not that difficult to change things around.
Build it with a clutch and get it setup. If it doesn't work out and you want to squeeze a little more, its not that hard to install a new stuffing tube, longer flex and possibly move the engine a tad. Its all part of the fun.

There simply is not enough market to get a profit on the money & time & materials. 8 Ball bearings, 3 seals. Splined shafts. shifting forks.

Try a post in the RC cars and monster trucks. They already have full transmissions.
I would just buy their ENGINE & TRANS. and be done with the job.
