Motor housing and waterproofing
 

I had a noob question that I'm hoping someone could help with.

I'm installing an aquastar (hobbyking) motor with water jacket into a new hull. Assuming you need to use a shaft seal on the output shaft of the motor as there is no seal present (that I can see) just a bearing with a dust case.

Would anyone suggest machining a round plate that houses an output shaft seal and bolts to the motor mounts? That would kill 2 birds with 1 stone but I was surprised that there is such little length on the output shaft to both achieve a good seal, and also couple the prop to as well. Unless you normally mount the motor further forward and achieve the shaft seal further back at the transom?

The motor is usually a long way away from the water. Starting at the motor, there is a coupler to connect to the prop shaft which runs in a tube with watertight bearings at each end to get the drive out of the hull, then the prop fixes to the end of that shaft. The outer tube is sealed to the hull where it passes through.
A water cooled motor usually has its cooling fed via a tube from a pickup somewhere near the prop, through the motor cooler, then away via another tube to outside the hull. The actual motor, like everything else inside the hull, should stay dry.
