Default Rustler XL-5 with 3S vs Rustler VXL with 6 Cell

What would be overall better betweenRustler XL-5 with a 3S packand a Rustler VXL with a 7.2 NiMH?

Thats easy...

Rustler VXL with a 7.2 NiMH... why 7.2v??? I think 8.4v is the norm for rustlers with nimh packs.

The XL-5 cant handle 11.1v. With the stock gearing I wouldent expect the Titan to last that long either

Personally I would get the cheaper XL-5, sell the ESC & Motor and put a Ezrun combo in it... then that way u can safely run a 3s.... Just need to move the positive fan wireover to the BEC....

Would this be a good system? I probably won't last a week with that type of power.

To much Kv for 3s I'd go with this from hobbypartz:
http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-35a-...tem-combo.html

Or mix and match:
esc
http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-60a-...-1-10-car.html
motor
http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m23-car-3650-3930.html

Either way try and stay in the 3000kv range if you plan to run 3s

What would you recommend for 7.2 NiMH?

Stock motor... a 7.2v nimh does not have enough power to power a preformance brushless system...

But the 35a combos are fine for a rustler. a 60a wont give it any more power...

But a 35a combo say 3900kv or 4300kv on 3s is good for instant wheelies.....

If your just going to stick to a 6 or 7 cell nimh/2s lipo then I would do this:

http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-35a-9t-3650-motor.html

or this:
esc
http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-60a-...-1-10-car.html
motor
http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-seri...ess-motor.html

The 60a esc for the amount of amps the motor will pull(35a esc is only rated to 9t). Also, the 35a on 3s with anything over 3300kv is at its limits and will stress the esc till it lets the magic smoke out. Just to clarify why I offered the 60a esc with the 3930KV motor in my previous post instead of the 35a version.

Experience and esc manual.
Losi xxx-t, 35a 4300kv combo. Smoked an esc fet after about 3 weeks of doing speed runs with just 12.6v(9 nimh cells)

Also, the manual states to not run anything under 12t on 3s through the 35a.

Sorry, I didn't know if you didn't post in the rustler/slash threads you weren't allowed to talk about esc/motors.

Im not saying that at all.. Its just ive had first hand experance with a 3900kv 3s powered rustler & a Slash & there are guys in the rustler forum running the 4300kv motor... and u havent
Go read the last few pages of the rustler thread there is a guy running a 25a ESC with a 4300kv motor in a bandit...

OK so u smoked a ESC with thremalshutdown doing speed runs.... over geared????

or did that under powered battery smoke the fet? before it thermal protection kicked in?

lets say a 9cell under load has a max voltage of 10.8v and 5000mah and 7c rating... thats only 378watts... no wonder ur setup failed doing speed runs...
did the battery last????

a nine cell under load is likely much lower than that. probably around 9.5-10v. and i used to run my VXL motor on 4 cells, so id have to say gearing is the issue.

sell the XL-5 and go BL/Lipo. $40 for a 100A speed control, $30 for a 600w 540 motor. $15 for batts. done.

I'm not saying the 35a won't run 3s w/the higher Kv motors. It will, but damage caused by pulling to many amps is done over time, not just in one instance. (unless your pulling ALOT over, like 100 amps through the 35 amp esc)It will stress the esc each time, till something gives.
Here is a chart I found on ezrun motor amps(one of only a very few I've found) I would be interested in your wattmeter findings to see how accurate these on this page are, so post them up.

http://www.giantcod.co.uk/ezrun-4300...-p-403297.html

As you can see, it shows the 4300kv motor pulling a max of 45amps. It shows max 500watts of power, to get that max power they have to use a 3s lipo. (500watts/11.1volts= 45 amps)

It also shows the 12s (12t 3300kv) pulling a max of 35amps, in conjunction with the manual to stay under the 12t motor limit.

OK so u smoked a ESC with thremalshutdown doing speed runs.... over geared????
14/88, might be able to argue undergeared but my normal for 2s was 18/88.

or did that under powered battery smoke the fet? before it thermal protection kicked in?
Though I don't know why you say its "underpowered", other than it being a nimh, it's possible there was some form of ripple current but as far as I know, CC escs were the only ones suffering from those. At least, were the only ones, on forums, being complained about.

lets say a 9cell under load has a max voltage of 10.8v and 5000mah and 7c rating... thats only 378watts... no wonder ur setup failed doing speed runs...

I'm not sure where you're leading with my battery watts leading to the failure. Your figures show the battery capable of 35amps. (378watts/10.8volts= 35 amps) The esc is 35 amps, if the motor is going to pull more than 35 amps from the battery, then the esc is in trouble too.

The battery is still working and I sometime still use it with a 60amp esc.

You ran a vxl on a 35amp with 4s? Or is this to someone else?
