Plastic is inferior in 1/5th scale gas applications. They get warm due to the friction, become soft and then suddenly give way violently. Almost every 5b owner has upgraded to steel gears after stripping the plastic ones. I know I did.

wow, I would think they would use hardened steel right away! nylon is great for small scale applications but thats about it, however if my only choice was plastic and aluminum gears, i would pick plastic any day.

agree on that aluminum is too soft for gears
I had an 1/8th scale aluminum pinion once (forgot what ESC it came with) after 25 seconds in a savage I had a nice round 0 tooth pinion on my motor, and I mean it was COMPLETELY flat and polished

I love it how they try to sell "lightened alumium" drivetrain parts that replace steel, the miniscule amount of weight and rotating mass you trim, cripples your durability, the nano second you shave off the lap could cost you an entire race due to a breakdown.

lightened clutch bells, shoes and flywheels do help a tiny bit, and don't destroy your durability, those I do use.

I forget what website I saw but there was a belt for Redcat's I think that looked interesting! I think (and possibly may/will be wrong) that it is better to have nylon. Mine in my Nutech tb3 have not given me a problem "YET" but I would think steel gears would be tougher but still get very hot and transfer that heat into the crank,bearings,etc...
