Default Traxas Rustler VXL, Pinion Gear Question ...

hi gang ...
have a question about the gearing of the stock rusty vxl ....

as you can see stock gearing is said to be 25/83 ....

But theres a seperate pinion gear that came included.

my question is, is this seperate included pinion gear, "28", meant to be used for speed runs only?
Or can it be used for having all-a-round fun as the one that came installed?

is there anything wrong with just running that "28" all the time? be it for bashing, jumping, racing, etc.,etc...
thanks all.

The 28 should be fine. It's just for more powerful batteries and higher speeds without the motor getting too hot.

That is NOT CORRECT. The optional gear is for speed runs or running on the street only. The 28T pinion will over heat the motor in most cases if you run in grass or dirt. Of course there are a number of other things that need to be considered as well like tire size and the outside tempature. If it's 20F then then you can run just about any pinion without hurting the motor. If it's 90F then you'll have a hard time keeping the motor cool with the stock 25T pinion.

Do yourself a huge favor and buy a temp gun and use it to check the motor and ESC temps a few times during the runs. If the motor exceeds 160F then you need to gear down.
