Default Help to extend Chassis Electix Boost please

Mine just arrived and I am very impressed.
This is my first RC vehicle so I wasn't exactly sure on what the quality and value would be like but from what I have got I am very pleased.

I would like to lengthen the chassis by around 3" / 7.5cm.
(I am scratch building a 6th scale WWII Jeep body the wheels are wide enough but the axles are not far enough apart).

So I was wondering if there are any off the shelf extendned chassis that would do the job or any methods which are best used for this please.

Any help will be very much appreciated,

Bern

Can you copy it out and make a new one from alluminium and stretch out the wheelbase, scratch building a jeep i would say its within your ability.

FuelCoupe,

I was wondering wther this was the way to go but thought I would ask before "reinventing the wheel".

I am thinking of an aluminium sheet "sandwich" to keep weight down but stop flexing problems.

Since posting this I have also seen a custom made extension from Xtreme Racing.
I am ot sure if it is long enough but I have sent them an enquiry.

Thank you for the advice,
Bern

could buy a second chassis (fairly cheap for just the main chassis) and cut the 2 to get the added lenght. Then some aluminum bracket to bolt the 2 together.

Another options (since you have seen the aftermarket ones) is just to buy some aluminum from a hardware store and copy what the fancy aftermarket one does. Im sure it just bolts where the trans goes and moves the trans mount further back.

I have found 4mm to be pretty light and yet strong, can be bent with big crashes tho. Unless your doing serious bashing I would say that would be acceptable. If its in your abilitys and you have the time I would suggest building your own, purely on the basis of satisfaction, always leaves a good feeling when you know you built it. I have recently tried sandwiching aluminium between perspex which has a thin layer of aluminium, might be an ok idea with lexan in place of perspex but I dont recomend perspex, despite the aluminium core it still cracks.

NitroFR and SportsC,

Thank you for your help I like both of these ideas.
Cutting and shunting two chassis together hadn't occured to me.

One of my customers (I'm a gardener) was throwing out an old electric cooker so I've taken a couple of thin metal panels off that
to make a templates and will then decide which way to go.

I'm off to Goggle Electrix Boost chassis now to see what they cost,

Here hope this helps....

just looking the boost chassis is around $10

here is the chassis from my old rustler. its been extended from cutting and shutting 2 chassis. now i only did that so there was no gap in between the halfs.
with ur project I dont think it will matter if there is a gap.

as u can see rather than using straight alloy sheets ive used alloy angle top and bottom.... it was extended around 30mm

another option would be to permanently fit the chassis to the jeep u have built, and use the jeeps floor as the chassis, I dare say with ur body u problary dont even need the "boosts" chassis at all. just mount it all directly

PHM,

Good to hear from you again.

Funny enough I bought some alloy angle from the local hardware store for just this purpose.

A second chassis cost me £11.99p including P&P.
Thank you for your photos when I get it I now know where to make the join.
Once I've tested thissetup I might use the bodytub of my Jeep as you suggest.

While I'm waiting for the chassis to be delivered I've decided to sculp some 6th scale heads based on a TV series that used to be on here
called Dads Army which was a comedy about a fictional WWII Home Guard unit. I'll adapt my Action Men accordingly once I've figured out how to cast molds from the modellers plasticine originals I've created.

Once again you're help is very muchappreciated regarding the chassis,

Bern

Slightly off topic, for your casting check out sculpting stores and try and get your hands on some "Pinkysil" and a suitable resin to cast from.. I'd give you links but there all Aussie stores. Its not cheep tho and if your only doing heads it may be just as simple to sculpt them from Air drying modelling clay, can pick up small amounts (half kilo etc) at most decent art supply shops and once you get the hang of it it's easy to work with and ready in 24hrs, can be painted, sanded and all the rest . Loved Dads Army cant wait to see your sculpting of the characters.
I also add if its for just cruising around for your son, the cut and shut idea would probably be the simplest as far as the chassis goes or a direct mount to the car as Ph sugested.
Ph did you do much off road with that Rustler after lengthening it ? As in jumping etc. Interested to know how it held up if you did. Did it still want to carry the front all the time and did it twist any during hard turns? I am having trouble with getting my vxl to handle like the nitro and come to the conclusion it either needs a longer wheelbase or some serious weight adjustment. i did toss up the idea of a cut and shut but was worried about twist and bending.

Sorry to hijack your thread Invicta.

FuelC,

Thank you for the suggestion regarding air drying clay.

If I ever get the urge to have another go at sculpting that sounds like the way to go.
At the moment I have had five goes at two of the three heads and by using plasticine I can just defreeze them, put them on top of a radiator and when warm enough reuse the material to have another go.
e.g. I've had three goes at Corporal Jones probbly becuase he was a youngish guy made up to look like a pensioner (also my lack of skill might have something to do with it).

No worries about my thread. I'm interested to learn and hear about who is contributing.

Dont give up on it, for what your attempting I do recomend the clay tho, other methods are only really suited to casting dont think you want multiples tho, clay you make the original and its done. Can still cast from it too if you want multiples. Skills only come with practice. Might help if you dont approach it as a sculpting project, aproach it like the jeep, make pieces and then assemble it. I do look forward to seeing more of this project.

How high are your figures in mm ?

FuelC,

Thank you for the tips.

My figures are 12" Action Man (UK) / GI Joe (USA) "Toys".
I am just replacing the original heads with the ones I am making.

Kind regards,
Bern

Just to show how things are comming along.

Here is the Electrix Boost with the lengthen chassis (two chassis cut and then joined as per PHM's photos).

The "Body" mock up is in foam board with a couple of test bits from my original wooden version.
At the moment the bodytub is only sitting ontop of the Boost to give me an idea of how far I have to drop it
down around and onto the Boost to get the correct proportions.

My thinking at the moment is that I may have to make some hollow cargo items in a suitable pile for the rear which will actually be part of the bodytub so I can wrap the foamboard panels down and around the Boost parts.

Great to see all the suggestions comming together to form an actual RC vehicle.

Thank you again to all,
Bern

Lookin' good, nearly there....

I see what u mean that it needs to be droped down....

here is another project i did, that might be helpfull. I had to cut the cargo area to get this body to sit low enough.... I dare say u will have to do something like this, but then cover it with some scale acessories... keep up the good work

Update,

I noticed the front end sticks out too far so I've made the modification to the KNex frame and foam board panels.
As it's remembrance day here I've also given the figures a Poppy to wear.

On with the finishing work.

phmaximus,

Thank you for your comments.
Taking a video is the next step I have in mind but how would I post it?
