Whew! That looks like an old mechanical speed controller. I suggest just getting all new electronics. You can get a perfectly good servo for that car for $12. http://www.hobbypartz.com/servo-mg946r.html
I see the motor is BIG, and an old brushed type. Could still be useable, but, brushed motors wear out. Or rather, the brushes wear out. And if they aren't replaceable, the motor needs to be replaced. In that case, I would get one of these brushless motor systems: http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-35a-9t-3650-motor.html Your car is very much like my Evader, and I have these exact items in my car. They've both lasted over two years so far! Brushless motors can potentially last forever if they're cleaned occasionally and the bearings lubed or replaced. AND they are FAR more powerful than the old brushed motors. Especially if you power them with LiPo batteries (highly reccomended). http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-30c-40...se-direct.html
And you'll need a LiPo charger for that battery: http://www.hobbypartz.com/73p-ac680-accharger.html
And the news is even better regarding a new transmitter & receiver: http://www.hobbypartz.com/fs-g2-24ghz-radio.html $20!!
No crystals, no interference, great range, no big telescoping antenna whip to break.
With that setup, you can easily get close to 40mph speeds and 25min run-times.
I would also recommend getting an infra-red "no touch" thermometer for monitoring motor temps during runs. Brushless motors are ALMOST indestructable, but like all motors, don't like too much heat. A brushless motor will run happily between 130 to 150 degrees F all day long. Anything over 180 you run the risk of demag-ing the rotor magnets and/or melting the stator winding's insulation. Keep that in mind, and you'll have years of good fun.
Providing that you can still get spare parts for that old car.......

RE: Old car needs remote and cervo
Looks like it's the Stadium Thunder / Blitzer chassis. I think you can still get spares for it (I have one and still beat on it regularly - fun truck), depending on the part.
I agree with Rob that brushless is a nice route to go - but if you want to get off the ground cheaper for now, I have found a nice brushed setup that can handle NiMh or LiPo batteries for the future when you get there. The Losi MSC12L is a brushed ESC (that handles LiPo and has a low voltage cutoff) that takes some lower turned motors, and can be had for the $35-40 range new. I paired that with a Titan 550 12 Turn motor (can be had for the $12 range new) in my Stadium Thunder, and it's a blast.
Doing something like that in the interim might be wise, until you're prepared to put more $$ towards a BL setup and LiPo batteries and chargers that can handle it.
I run some fast brushless setups in some of my vehicles, but have found that a nice brushed setup is often a good choice too, depending on the vehicle. (I'm not going to put a killer brushless setup in an old platform and then stress the transmission to high heaven).

Also, Rob made a good call in recommending the FlySky 2.4GHz radio system (since you were asking about that first and foremost) - FlySky is a nice inexpensive radio with cheap receiver units ($8!), so it's a very nice option.

Yes, I like that brushed motor/esc combo - you just have to look in "for sale" places (ebay, forums) to get a deal. Lots of folks knock the Titan 550, but for me it's a cheap motor that gets the job done. Sometimes they die early, but by and large I've had good success with them. I run bigger/heavier tires on my Stadium Thunder, so the bigger 550 motor doesn't overheat like my Sport Tuned one did. That Titan isn't the best motor in the world, but it works for me. *shrug* And if it dies - hey, $12.
Heck, for now you can keep your stock motor (looks like a 27T silvercan), if it runs. It'll work!
Also, if you can't find the FlySky GT2 (out of stock?), the GT3B is a good cheaper choice too.
For a servo, the one Rob linked to is fine of course. Alternately (again, if that one is out of stock or something), the Futaba S3004 (about $14) will be fine in that truck. I have always liked Futaba servos.
EDIT:
Hmm, come to think of it, I can't recall if I had to dremel where the motor mounts to the transmission to get that wider Titan to fit. I think I did. So maybe skip the Titan 550, see if your current silvercan runs, and start with that. I'm sure others will suggest other motors to try. You'd have to stick with a 540 size though to prevent the need to dremel.
My basic idea though was to go with a brushed setup that's cheap, if you didn't want to go the brushless setup right away. But brushless is nice, and the stuff Rob linked to is good, so I'm certainly not discounting that as an option!

Looks like a fun truck. So a servo, remote ,esc and if I'm lucky that the motor still runs it will be operational? if I can get the wheels turning for cheap then I'll upgrade!!

RE: Old car needs remote and cervo
Well you can check if the motor is ok just connect a battery to the 2 motor wires and it should turn.

Woah, wait; a BRUSHLESS syetem in an old MSC car? Have you people lost your minds? You'll kill the diff and transmission!!!!
To the OP; just get a Dynamite Tazer and an HPI Firebolt;
I do agree on the receiver, transmitter and servo, though.
EDIT; AND A LIPO TOO? Why not a 7.2 volt 5000 Mah Battery and an Onyx charger;?

HA! Oh, yeah...kinda got carried away, did we? That car probably has plastic gears in its tranny, huh?! Yeah...a decent BRUSHED system like Eman suggested would be better for the OP's car. Sorry mate.

Despite the modern "you must have all metal gears" hype for BL, it's not always true. Heck, even in my XL-5 generation Stampede all I had to upgrade was the idler gear to metal (the rest stock plastic), and it ran just fine on a 5700 2s setup for a long time.
Now, I wouldn't put a wild 3s BL setup in this thing - but a regular appropriate BL one would be fine, if one wanted to do so.
