Default Is This A Good ESC / Motor Combo For Slash MT?

hey folks ...
is this a good esc / motor combo for a 4x4 slash MT?
see here: http://www.castlecreations.com/produ...inder_sct.html

not planning on running anything over 2s - maybe 3s MAX.
can i still run NIMH?
will this sytem perform better than the stock velineon system?

- gearing down to 11 tooth pinion w/ stock 54 spur ....
- tires are pretty big at ...
SPECS:
Outer Diameter: 140mm (5.5")
Inner Diameter: 62.5mm (2.5")
Width: 57mm (2.2")

any help - as always, much appreciated!
thanks all.

That is my favorite low dollar combo ! Keep a extra in the pit box just because of how well it works. Motor alone is worth the price of the combo imo

Works in everything I have ran just need to gear accordingly and you should be good. Will work with Nimh but not really ideal. No comparison to the VXl system, motor runs cooler, faster and much more torque.

WOW! Zonked, thanks a bunch for the reassurance.
about gearing accordingly, would you think om okay where im at? ( at the moment, 11 / 54 )
is there another combo that you might suggest (that would fit my application (slash 4x4 MT) )that im might be overlooking in the same price range / more or less?
i only ask so as not to be short changing myself simply for not knowing you know.
thanks again for chiming in!!

I would go with that gearing (11/54) as that is stock Stampede gearing. maybe pickup a few extra pinions 12,13 to try out once you get everything running.

The only other combos I would recommend are the MMP and 1410 motor , Cost about 100 dollars more but will be safe for 3s operation when you want to blow the tires off it lol.

Default what do i do with the esc power switch?

made the move and just finished installing it (for the most part).
what i mean by "for the most part" is i dont know what the heck to do with the power switch to the esc!
got the esc mounted ...

and basically heres what i did ...

now you guys have any advice on what to do about this switch? kinda wish i could tuck it away somewhere. kinda wish it didnt exist like the traxxas esc, you know just a button to push.
is it safe to venture into trying to remove it?

Double sided tape for the esc and switch, little vibration protection never hurts.

You can cut the wires to the switch, solder them together and tuck away.

hey zonked!, thanks again for chiming ...
so hmmm, you're saying it probably wasnt too good idea, strapping it down that way?
at my job we've got some really serious hvy duty double sided tape that we use when we need to tag / ID buckets (excavator / backhoe / loader buckets) you would think that thse tags wont last! that double sided tape is no joke.
your saying i would do better to use that then?

not a problem, I believe that will hold the esc in place but I prefer to have some foam protection to help with vibration that is passed through the chassis.

Dont have to go industrial strength with the tape, you may want to remove it at some point lol . I use some stuff that was picked up at big lots for .99, been using it for years and is much better than the 3m double sided tape you find in most stores.

hmmm - ok.
not like im ready to run this thing tomorrow, so ill make the necessary changes. i can see what you mean about the vibrattion.
about the power switch ...
youre saying its no big deal to simply cut the cables and simply connect the ends ?! thats its? no harm done?

not a big deal at all. Just remember that your ESC will turn on soon as you plug the battery in so make sure your radio is on first.

a little confused after reading the "drivers ed" guide that came with the esc / motor combo ....
amongst the settings for low voltage, it indicates that its set, by default, at the 'auto lipo setting'. should i not need to worry then about the setting #4 ("6V")?
see the image below. note the warning sign and how it says that this setting should be used if youre using 2s lipo packs.
but if its set auto detect, doesnt that mean that i need make no changes?

However, calibrating the esc with the radio is a pain when the switch is gone. you need an extra arm to hold everything. I find it just a lot easier when the switch is still there.

gotya - yes the switch is there.
im just wondering about this low voltage cut-off setting ...
should i set it to the 6V (setting #4) or is it perfecly fine to leave it at the "default / auto-detect"

Personally would recommend setting 4. Have used the auto detect setting for a year without ever having a problem but once I got the programmer changed it 3.2v and never looked back.

you guys are the best! thanks a bunch for the feedback!
will leave it as is then.

on a side note - i do have another concern / question .....
do the fans on the motor and esc know when they need to turn on?
reason i ask is i was just outside, giving the set up my 1st run and noticed that the fans weren't running. motor and esc were a little warmer than just warm and i was wondering if they will turn on at a certain point or should i be worried about not having them connected properly?

can i pull off a 12 tooth pinion w/ this set up.
had some fun with it the other day running the 11 tooth pinion but am curious weather i can run a 12 tooth without any issues / concerns considering the new power system and wheel size.
- power system: Castle Creations Sidewinder SCT Combo with 1410-3800KV Motor
- hotbody rover tires (they're right about / just over 5")
